The most common cause of hypercalcemia in hospitalized patients is malignancy. Primary hyperparathyroidism most commonly causes hypercalcemia in the outpatient setting. These two account for over 90% of all cases of hypercalcemia.

Discontinuation of denosumab (Dmab) may be necessary due to adverse events or an unfavorable long‐term risk–benefit profile. However, accumulating evidence demonstrates pronounced rebound phenomena after withdrawal, most notably a marked increase in multiple vertebral fractures, and, in some reports, elevated mortality.

A parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) has been invoked as being responsible for the humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy. Eight of the first 13 amino acids of PTHrP are identical with those in PTH, but there is no other significant homology.
