Reoperative surgery for hyperparathyroidism is associated with increased incidence of complications including vocal cord paralysis, permanent hypoparathyroidism, and persistent hypercalcemia. Surgical re-exploration should consist of symptomatic or low-risk patients.

The Lancet, 1973Abstract Four cases of acute arthritis developed after parathyroidectomy, and pseudogout was suspected in each patient. All patients demonstrated typical chondrocalcinosis in radiographs of knees and wrists, and acute polyarticular arthritis developed in these affected joints.
