Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

High brilliance γ-ray generation from the laser interaction in a carbon plasma channel

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2022
The generation of collimated, high brilliance γ-ray beams from a structured plasma channel target is studied by means of 2D PIC simulations. Simulation results reveal an optimum laser pulse duration of 20 fs for generating photon beams of brilliances up ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

TNSA based proton acceleration by two oblique laser pulses in the presence of an axial magnetic field

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics
We employ two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations to examine, in detail, the effect of a kilo-Tesla magnetic field applied along the normal of a flat TNSA target on the cutoff energy of protons/ions.

Advances in Design and Fabrication of Micro-Structured Solid Targets for High-Power Laser-Matter Interaction

open access: yesPhotonics
Accelerated particles have multiple applications in materials research, medicine, and the space industry. In contrast to classical particle accelerators, laser-driven acceleration at intensities greater than 1018 W/cm2, currently achieved at TW and PW ...

Pitfalls in Modeling Walls and Neutrals Physics in Gas Discharges Using Parallel Particle-in-Cell Monte Carlo Collision Algorithms

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2018
Owing to their ability to model the physics of low-pressure plasmas away from thermodynamical equilibrium, particle-in-cell (PIC) techniques have become one of the tools of choice to simulate the operation of many plasma devices. This trend is reinforced

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Simulations of a kinetic plasma instability in streamers of transient luminous events

open access: yesArchives of Mechanics
We have supplemented the Particle-In-Cell code SMILEI with the module for collisions between charged and neutral particles. The code has been evaluated and used for the examination of the nonlinear stability and dynamics of plasma in conditions of ...

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only
