Estimating Particle Shape and Orientation Using Volume Tensors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We develop statistical procedures for estimating shape and orientation of arbitrary three-dimensional particles. We focus on the case where particles cannot be observed directly, but only via sections.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Evaluating Sand Particle Surface Smoothness Using a New Computer-Based Approach to Improve the Characterization of Macroscale Parameters

open access: yesGeotechnics, 2023
The analysis of sands, and the foundation systems with which they interact, are largely dependent on macroscale behavioral parameters that represent the aggregated response of several microscale characteristics. This research paper examines the influence

Neither Sphere nor Cube - Analyzing the Particle Shape Using Small-Angle Scattering and the Superball Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Accurate characterization of the nanocrystal shape with high statistical relevance is essential for exploiting the strongly shape-dependent properties of cuboidal nanoparticles towards applications. This work presents the development of a new small-angle

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Combining experiment and prediction to explore surface chemistry and dissolution

open access: yesIUCrJ
A crystal structure is often an integral component in the development of a new pharmaceutical product, and these structures are frequently used to understand, assess and often predict both the manufacturing and in vivo behaviour of these compounds ...

Discrete element modeling of non-spherical particles using a spherical shape

open access: yesREM: International Engineering Journal, 2020
Real non-spherical particles can be modeled using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) with sphere clusters, superquadrics, or polyhedral particles. However, in applications involving a considerable number of particles, the analysis can become impracticable.

Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Improved Metaball Discrete Element Method with Robust Contact Algorithm for General-Shaped Particles with Rounded Features

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Particle shape is a critical factor governing the macroscopic behavior of granular materials. While the Discrete Element Method (DEM) has proven to be a powerful tool for modeling these materials, the accurate representation of particles with realistic ...
