Pressure and flow rate characteristics of multiple-passage duct flows

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2017
In industrial devices such as heat exchangers, fuel cells, and chemical reactors, the fluid flow enters the inlet manifold and streams into many branch passages.

Time scales for fission at finite temperature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The concept of the "transient effect" is examined in respect of a "mean first passage time". It is demonstrated that the time the fissioning system stays inside the barrier is much larger than suggested by the transient time, and that no enhancement of ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Gastrointestinal tract morphology, nutrient digestibility, and digesta mean retention time in laying hens of two different breeds fed with fine or coarse oat hulls

open access: yesPoultry Science
: The inclusion of fiber-rich ingredients in poultry diets is expected to increase due to societal-, ecologic-, and economic developments. Particle size of dietary fiber sources, such as oat hulls (OH), has been shown to play a key-role in nutrient ...

Landau theory of restart transitions

open access: yes, 2019
We develop a Landau like theory to characterize the phase transitions in resetting systems. Restart can either accelerate or hinder the completion of a first passage process.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Unsteady blade-passage flows of a mixed-flow pump at performance-curve instability

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2018
For designing a high-performance mixed-flow pump, control and suppression of performance-curve instability is crucial. For doing so, clarification of the essential flow physics that leads to the performance-curve instability is crucial in addition to an ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
