Film-cooling effectiveness with developing coolant flow through straight and curved tubular passages [PDF]

open access: yes
The data were obtained with an apparatus designed to determine the influence of tubular coolant passage curvature on film-cooling performance while simulating the developing flow entrance conditions more representative of cooled turbine blade.

The X-ray Ridge Surrounding Sgr A* at the Galactic Center

open access: yes, 2005
We present the first detailed simulation of the interaction between the supernova explosion that produced Sgr A East and the wind-swept inner ~ 2-pc region at the Galactic center.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Stress and strain among merchant seafarers differs across the three voyage episodes of port stay, river passage and sea passage.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
BackgroundA sea voyage is characterized by a variety of work requirements for the ship's crew, basically reflected in three voyage episodes: port stay, river passage and sea passage.

On Short-Term Loan Interest Rate Models: A First Passage Time Approach

open access: yesMathematics, 2018
In this paper, we consider a stochastic diffusion process able to model the interest rate evolving with respect to time and propose a first passage time (FPT) approach through a boundary, defined as the “alert threshold”, in order to evaluate

Enhancement of stability in randomly switching potential with metastable state

open access: yes, 2004
The overdamped motion of a Brownian particle in randomly switching piece-wise metastable linear potential shows noise enhanced stability (NES): the noise stabilizes the metastable system and the system remains in this state for a longer time than in the ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Knotting probabilities after a local strand passage in unknotted self-avoiding polygons

open access: yes, 2011
We investigate the knotting probability after a local strand passage is performed in an unknotted self-avoiding polygon on the simple cubic lattice.
