Common Passwords and Common Words in Passwords
2020Passwords often include dictionary words or meaningful strings. Figuring out these words or strings may significantly reduce the number of password guessing. The wordlists used by password cracking software, such as Hashcat, typically include the words from various dictionaries and leaked plain passwords.

On password strength measurements: Password entropy and password quality
2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTING, ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING (ICCEEE), 2013In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to compute the strength of passwords based on two measurements, mainly: password entropy and password quality. The passwords considered by the algorithm consist of eight characters alpha numeric with special characters. For such passwords, the analysis phase identified the low/high entropy patterns and low/high

Hacking Passwords that Satisfy Common Password Policies
13th International Conference on Security of Information and Networks, 2020The password policies for 14 popular websites were checked and a list of passwords that satisfied the minimal requirements created for each website. 58 users then created realistic passwords that satisfied the minimal requirements. A special purpose cracking computer was built to crack these passwords using dictionary and brute-force attacks.

A recent survey conducted by Sophos (www.sophos.com/pressoffice/news/articles/2006/04/passwordadvice.html) asked, "Do you use the same password for multiple Web sites?" Their admittedly unscientific results confirmed what most of us would expect: 41 percent of the respondents said they always use the same password, 45 percent said they have a few ...

The article examines the factors that will contribute to the eradication of computer passwords. Topics discussed include the need for computer and Internet users to consider long, complex, and "unguessable" passwords and the ability of cyber criminals to hack into e-mail accounts and company servers.

Abstract The password has long served as the traditional authenticator for system access. As the least expensive authentication method — one usually provided by vendors as a standard “feature” of their system — the much used password remains little understood in terms of its effectiveness.

It is indeed becoming more challenging for users to maintain different strong passwords for their ever increasing accounts. The lack of secure access credentials has recently led to the compromise of millions of users passwords stored in popular websites, due to guessing, dictionary, or brute force attacks.

Understanding passwords – a taxonomy of password creation strategies
Information & Computer Security, 2019PurposeUsing authentication to secure data and accounts has grown to be a natural part of computing. Even if several authentication methods are in existence, using passwords remains the most common type of authentication. As long and complex passwords are encouraged by research studies and practitioners alike, computer users design passwords using ...

Password Strength Measurement without Password Disclosure
2019 14th Asia Joint Conference on Information Security (AsiaJCIS), 2019As a mechanism for promoting improvement in the strength of the user password, there is a mechanism that measures the password strength and gives feedback to the user. There are a wide variety of current strength measurement methods, and there are also methods that transmit a password during input to the remote server to perform strength measurement ...
