Complete Genome Sequence of Listeria monocytogenes Strain MR310, Isolated from a Pastured-Flock Poultry Farm System

open access: yesGenome Announcements, 2018
Investigation of Listeria monocytogenes transmission from environmental sources associated with pasture-raised chickens to poultry products is needed to determine ways to prevent potential foodborne illness.

Exploring variations in potential carbon and nitrogen mineralization in managed grasslands among the diversity of soils in North Carolina

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
Under steady–state conditions, potential nitrogen mineralization in soil under grasslands is closely tied to potential carbon mineralization. This study provides supporting evidence that field–specific nitrogen fertilizer recommendations could be indicated by using a simple and rapid analysis of soil–test biological activity.

Decoupling climate and human impacts on the nitrogen cycle during the Irish Bronze Age

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Disentangling climate variability and human activity in past nitrogen cycling is key to understanding ecosystems. Previous studies in Ireland observed a widespread, permanent shift in terrestrial nitrogen cycling during Later Prehistory, potentially linked to intensifying land‐use.

Restricting the intake of a cereal-based feed in free-range-pastured poultry: effects on performance and meat quality.

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2008
Pastures are assumed to be good sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and other bioactive compounds. In this study, we evaluated the effects of restricting the intake of a cereal-based feed on the consumption of a legume-based pasture, and consequently ...

Macronutrient and micronutrient profiles of meat types: insights into human health and diet

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite considerable advances in global health and nutrition, emerging challenges such as population growth, climate change, and limited natural resources continue to threaten food security. Meat remains an essential component of the human diet, supplying high‐quality proteins, essential amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and minerals necessary ...

Urbanization and food transition in the Brazilian Amazon: From wild to domesticated meat

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Urbanization is expected to influence food transitions, resulting in a shift from wild foods to more domesticated foods. Concomitantly, food insecurity and urban demand for natural resources, including wildlife, are expected to increase overall, even when the per capita consumption is expected to decrease.

Identifying knowledge barriers to agroforestry adoption and co‐designing solutions to them

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Compared to monocultures, agroforestry can promote biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and climate resilience, whilst maintaining or enhancing production and profits. Despite this, uptake in temperate regions remains low. Knowledge gaps amongst land managers are a primary barrier to uptake, but little is known about which aspects of ...

Effects of wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) pomace feeding on gut microbiota and blood metabolites in free-range pastured broiler chickens.

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2019
There is a need to develop cost-effective approaches to modulate gut microbiota, promote bird health, and prevent infections in pasture-raised broiler chickens.

The Hidden Costs of Coffee Production in the Eastern African Value Chains

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There is increasing recognition that significant hidden costs associated with agrifood systems are not reflected in market prices. Coffee is among the three most traded agricultural commodities in the world and supports the livelihoods of more than 30 million smallholder households.

Importance of Farm Environment to Shape Poultry-Related Microbiomes Throughout the Farm-to-Fork Continuum of Pasture-Raised Broiler Flocks

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2019
The poultry farm environment plays a key role in the microbial colonization of chickens during production, which shapes what enters the processing and final retail environments.
