Engineering tandem VHHs to target different epitopes to enhance antibody‐dependent cell‐mediated cytotoxicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tandem VHH targeting distinct EGFR epitopes were engineered into a monovalent bispecific antibody (7D12‐EGA1‐Fc) with more potent ADCC without increasing affinity to EGFR. Structural modeling of 7D12‐EGA1‐Fc showed cross‐linking of separate EGFR domains to enhance CD16a engagement on NK cells.

Analytical assessment of metagenomic workflows for pathogen detection with NIST RM 8376 and two sample matrices

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
We assessed the analytical performance of metagenomic workflows using NIST Reference Material (RM) 8376 DNA from bacterial pathogens spiked into two simulated clinical samples: cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and stool.

KLK7 overexpression promotes an aggressive phenotype and facilitates peritoneal dissemination in colorectal cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KLK7, a tissue kallikrein‐related peptidase, is elevated in advanced colorectal cancer and associated with shorter survival. High KLK7 levels in ascites correlate with peritoneal metastasis. In mice, KLK7 overexpression increases metastasis. In vitro, KLK7 enhances cancer cell proliferation, migration, adhesion, and spheroid formation, driving ...

Prevalence of respiratory pathogens in nasal swabs from horses with acute respiratory disease in Belgium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Contagious respiratory infections are an important cause of respiratory disease in horses, resulting in impaired pulmonary function, poor performance and sometimes severe illness.

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

Investigation of the Efficacy of a Listeria monocytogenes Biosensor Using Chicken Broth Samples

open access: yesSensors
Foodborne pathogens are microbes present in food that cause serious illness when the contaminated food is consumed. Among these pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most serious bacterial pathogens, and causes severe illness.

Global shifts in mammalian population trends reveal key predictors of virus spillover risk. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Emerging infectious diseases in humans are frequently caused by pathogens originating from animal hosts, and zoonotic disease outbreaks present a major challenge to global health.
