The Preclinical Validation of 405 nm Light Parasiticidal Efficacy on Leishmania donovani in Ex Vivo Platelets in a Rag2−/− Mouse Model

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Violet–blue light of 405 nm in the visible spectrum at a dose of 270 J/cm2 alone has been shown to be an effective microbicidal tool for inactivating several bacteria, HIV-1, and Trypanosoma cruzi in ex vivo plasma and platelets.

Pathogen reduction across different host lifespans.

open access: yes, 2023
Level of pathogen reduction achieved across various times of vaccination with different average host lifespans indicated by the different colors. Solid lines represent the level of pathogen reduction achieved for a given date of vaccine introduction ...

Characterisation and Fertiliser Potential of Mechanically Dewatered Faecal Sludge from Anaerobic Digestion

open access: yesWaste
While mechanical dewatering is widely used in faecal sludge treatment, the agricultural potential of mechanically dewatered faecal sludge (MDFS) combined with anaerobic digestion (AD) remains underexplored, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where ...

Killing them softly:managing pathogen polymorphism and virulence in spatially variable environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Understanding why pathogen populations are genetically variable is vital because genetic variation fuels evolution, which often hampers disease control efforts.

Intestinal inflammation responds to microbial tissue load independent of pathogen/non-pathogen discrimination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The intestinal immune system mounts inflammatory responses to pathogens but tolerates harmless commensal microbiota. Various mechanisms for pathogen/non-pathogen discrimination have been proposed but their general relevance for inflammation control is ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Enhanced Biogas Production and Pathogen Reduction from Pig Manure Through Anaerobic Digestion: A Sustainable Approach for Urban Waste Management in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

open access: yesClean Technologies
In Abidjan, the treatment of pig waste is becoming a priority given the continued growth of pig farms, which readily reuse manure as organic fertilizer. This study evaluated the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion for simultaneous biogas production and ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
