Effectiveness of legally mandated non-custodial drug and alcohol treatment orders for improved health, well-being, global functioning and quality of life: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesHealth & Justice
Background Adults in the criminal justice system are disproportionately more likely to use alcohol and drugs compared to the general population. Legally mandated alcohol and drug treatment orders have been proposed as an alternative to prison.

Patient and public involvement in reducing health and care research waste [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Eighty five per cent of health research expenditure is potentially wasted due to failure to publish research, unclear reporting of research that is published, and the failure of new research studies to systematically review previous research ...

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Involving public and patients in research

open access: yesThe Bulletin of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, 2014
What does patient and public involvement (PPI) in research mean? The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) defines ‘patient and public’ as patients, potential patients, their carers, people who use health and social care services, and organisations that represent people who use these services.

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

“The power imbalance was blown out the window”: developing and implementing creative workshops to enhance communication of statistics in patient and public involvement in clinical trials

open access: yesResearch Involvement and Engagement
Despite the importance of statistical and numerical aspects in key decisions related to clinical trials and their impact in patient’s care, patient and public involvement remains underdeveloped in this field.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Giving permission to care for people with dementia in residential homes: learning from a realist synthesis of hearing-related communication

open access: yesBMC Medicine, 2019
Background Managing hearing communication for residents living with hearing loss and dementia in long-term care settings is challenging. This paper explores how care can be effective in optimising hearing communication for residents living with dementia.
