Arsenic pollution in Patos Lagoon estuarine sediments, Brazil

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2003
Arsenic distribution in sediments of the Mirim-Patos lagoonal system is investigated. Deposits of fresh water Mirim Lagoon and those of the fresh water part of the Patos Lagoon contain 2.5 and 7.7 mg kg(-1), respectively, on average of total arsenic.

The Patos Lagoon hydrodynamics during an El Niño event (1998)

open access: yesContinental Shelf Research, 2002
Abstract TELEMAC-2D, a two-dimensional depth-averaged finite element flow model, has been chosen for modelling the hydrodynamics of the Patos Lagoon during the 1998 El Nino event. The model is initially calibrated against measurements carried out between 20 and 29/10/98, and good agreement is achieved between measured and predicted longitudinal ...

Wind and freshwater influence over hydrocarbon dispersal on Patos Lagoon, Brazil

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2008
The two-dimensional barotropic, hydrodynamic and transport model MOHID is applied to the Patos Lagoon system using a nested modelling approach to reproduce both the lagoon and estuary hydrodynamics. A new Lagrangian oil spill model is presented and used to simulate a hypothetical oil spill in the estuary.

The Patos Lagoon summertime circulation and dynamics

open access: yesContinental Shelf Research, 1996
Abstract The main aspects of the summertime circulation and dynamics of the Patos Lagoon, a system located in southern Brazil and considered as one of the world's largest choked coastal lagoons, are studied through the analysis of time series of wind stress, water level and freshwater discharge, combined with the results of a barotropic circulation ...

The Patos Lagoon Estuary, Brazil

Ecological Studies, 2001
The dominant feature of the southern Brazilian coastal plain is the Patos-Mirim Lagoon complex, the Patos Lagoon (10,360 km2) being the world’s largest choked lagoon. About 80% of the lagoon is a freshwater system but at its southern reach (32°S), where the lagoon connects to the Atlantic Ocean, brackish waters and fringing marshes comprise an ...

Spatial Gradients in the Flow of Southern Patos Lagoon

Journal of Coastal Research, 2005
Abstract The necessity of improving our understanding of mixing, dispersion of salt, sediment, larvae and pollutants, and the increasing need of offering safe navigation conditions in the Patos Lagoon access channel highlighted the need of increasing knowledge on the flow spatial gradients in the area.

Inferring centennial terrigenous input for Patos Lagoon, Brazil: the world's largest choked coastal lagoon

Journal of Paleolimnology, 2021
This study introduces and discusses inorganic geochemical data from Patos Lagoon, the world’s largest choked coastal lagoon located in southern Brazil. Here, we characterise the sedimentary geochemical environment using different elemental ratios to assess the influence of both anthropogenic activities and the natural hydrological regime on the ...

The attenuation of tidal and subtidal oscillations in the Patos Lagoon estuary

open access: yesOcean Dynamics, 2004
The single, long and narrow channel that usually connects choked coastal lagoons to the ocean can serve as a natural hydraulic low-pass filter that reduces or eliminates tidal and subtidal effects inside the lagoon. This study proposes an alternative method of estimating the attenuation of the tidal and subtidal oscillations throughout the Patos Lagoon

Mercury pollution sources in sediments of Patos Lagoon Estuary, Southern Brazil

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2003
Present study has continued the investigation on distribution of mercury in estuarine sediments of Patos Lagoon which began whilst assessing the after-effect of enormous accidental discharge of sulfuric acid into the estuary. An attempt to evaluate the contribution of anthropogenic effluents on mercury pollution in sediments was undertaken.
