Coastal Plain and Patos Lagoon
1997Wetland and deep-water habitats (sensu Cowardin et al. 1979) of different types characterize the coastal plain of Brazil’s extreme south, though the Patos-Mirim Lagoon complex is the dominant feature. With a surface area of 10 227 km2, the Patos Lagoon classifies as the world’s largest choked lagoon (Kjerfve 1986).

The freshwater artisanal fishery of Patos Lagoon
Journal of Fish Biology, 2016In this study data relative to the fishery in the freshwater area of the Patos Lagoon are analysed, and the dynamics, fishing gears used and catches evaluated. The results reveal the existence of two fishery strategies: forbidden mesh size gillnets (FMG; <35 mm; square measure) and allowed mesh size gillnets (AMG; ≥35 mm; square measure).

Aspects of fish conservation in the upper Patos Lagoon basin
Journal of Fish Biology, 2016The Patos Lagoon basin is a large (201 626 km2) and complex drainage system in southern Brazil. The lagoon is 250 km long and 60 km wide, covering an area of 10 360 km2. The exchange of water with the Atlantic Ocean occurs through a 0·8 km wide and 15 m deep inlet, fixed by 4 km long jetties, at the southernmost part of the Patos Lagoon.

On the Dynamics of Mangueira Bay—Patos Lagoon (Brazil)
Journal of Coastal Research, 2007Abstract Mangueira Bay is a semi-enclosed system that is very important to the communities living around the city of Rio Grande. It is influenced by multiple and conflicting human impacts. This embayment is connected to Patos Lagoon Estuary through a narrow inlet and its dynamics seem to be related to the dynamics of the estuarine area. This study aims

Environment and Biota of the Patos Lagoon Estuary
1997The Patos Lagoon is part of the coastal province which is geologically defined by the Pelotas Basin and the basement (Villwock 1978). The basement is characterized by the Sul-Rio Grandense shield, composed of crystalline Precambrian rock formations, and by Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary and volcanic sequences of the Parana Basin, both of which ...

Nutrient flux and budget in Patos Lagoon estuary
Science of The Total Environment, 1994Abstract Numerous studies of nutrient cycling in estuarine systems have been conducted, although few have addressed estuaries of major coastal lagoonal systems. This paper describes studies of nutrient input and cycling within such a system. The aim of the present study was to describe the transport of nutrients to the Patos-Mirim estuary and to ...

Energy Flow and Habitats in the Patos Lagoon Estuary
1997The functional primary producers in the Patos Lagoon estuary include emersed and submersed macrophytes, benthic and floating macroalgae, cyanobacteria, and epibenthic, epiphytic, and planktonic microalgae. All supply food for estuarine and coastal consumers and interact with estuarine chemical cycles; some perform critical habitat functions during ...

Impacts of dredging on the hydromorphodynamics of the Patos Lagoon estuary, southern Brazil
Ocean Engineering, 2019Abstract Many estuaries present natural harbor conditions with relatively calm and shallow waters that provide a connection between the ocean and continental waterways. The increase in the demand for goods by the constant growing of the world population has forced estuaries to be altered by human activities, such as dredging, in order to maintain a ...
