Characterization of a mud deposit offshore of the Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil
Continental Shelf Research, 2009Abstract Rapid deposition of mud on the beach along the shoreface of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil dramatically influences the normal operations in the littoral zone. In the surf zone, fluid and suspended mud opposes water-wave movement and dissipates water-wave energy; on the beach, mud limits trafficability.

Identification of sectors susceptible to oil contamination in the Patos Lagoon

Toxic blooms of cyanobacteria in the Patos Lagoon Estuary, southern Brazil
Journal of Aquatic Ecosystem Health, 1996The Patos Lagoon is the largest lagoonal system in South America. Its waters are formed by a huge drainage basin (201,600 km2) situated in the most industrialized areas of the Southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. On its margins more than 3 million inhabitants live in several cities and towns.

Modelling the Water Quality of the Patos Lagoon, Brazil
2005A two-dimensional depth integrated finite element modelling suite comprising the flow model TELEN4AC-2D and the water quality model WQFLOW-2D has been calibrated to simulate the physics and chemistry of the Patos Lagoon and Estuary system in southern Brazil for the investigation of nutrients, primary production and faecal bacteria.

Remote Sensing Assessment of Suspended Matter and Dynamics in Patos Lagoon
Journal of Coastal Research, 2007Abstract This paper presents the results of satellite-image digital processing. The area of study covered Patos Lagoon (southern Brazil). Suspended matter distribution was used as conservative traces. Circulation patterns and their changes over time were also characterized.

The Challenge of Sustainable Aquaculture: Effects on the Environment of the Patos Lagoon Estuary
Journal of Coastal Research, 2007Abstract Over the last ten years, catches of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis by artisanal fishermen in the Patos Lagoon Estuary (southern Brazil) have been decreasing. This has created economic and social problems for approximately 3500 families, who rely on this activity as their main source of income.

Chemistry and distribution of trace elements in the Patos lagoon, South Brazil
2005This chapter reports a thorough study of the geochemistry of some metals in the sediments of the Patos lagoon, one of the biggest coastal lagoons in the world (and the biggest in Brazil). After a screening study of the sediments, which considered the granulometry, organic carbon, organic nitrogen and sulphur contents, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cr concentrations ...

Distribution of particulate trace metal in Patos Lagoon estuary (Brazil)
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 1994Abstract An attempt to assess natural vs. unnatural contributions to particulate metal concentrations in the estuarine region of Pato Lagoon was made. Particulate samples were collected under seasonal extremes of river discharge and should therefore reflect a wide range of conditions which potentially influence particulate metal levels.

Trace Metal Distribution in Sediments of the Patos Lagoon Estuary, Brazil
1988The Patos Lagoon estuarine area has experienced increasing urban and industrial development over the last two decades. As a result, its potential as fishing area for commercially important species is presently threatened. Recent studies have detected high organic pollution levels in the southern part of the estuary due to urban effluents from the city ...
