Lead induced alterations in rabbit spermatozoa motility and morphology in vitro

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2016
The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of lead chloride (PbCl2) on rabbit spermatozoa motility and morphology. Lead concentrations in the medium ranged between 0.45 and 11.17 μg/ml; incubation time was 240 min (analyzed immediately ...

Assessing the toxicity of Pb- and Sn-based perovskite solar cells in model organism Danio rerio

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2016
Intensive development of organometal halide perovskite solar cells has lead to a dramatic surge in power conversion efficiency up to 20%. Unfortunately, the most efficient perovskite solar cells all contain lead (Pb), which is an unsettling flaw that ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Heavy metals phytoextraction from heavily and moderately contaminated soil by field crops grown in monoculture and crop rotation

open access: yesSoil and Water Research, 2011
The uptake of Pb, Cd, Zn and biomass production of the plants Brassica juncea v. Opaleska, Triticale hexaploides var. Gabo and Helianthus annuus v. Maritza were observed in a field (trial) and a pot experiments during four years. The plants were grown in

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Jets in Pb–Pb collisions at ALICE [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
We report results on jet production in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV from the ALICE collaboration. The nuclear modification factor of jets reconstructed with a resolution parameter R=0.2 shows a strong, centrality dependent suppression with respect to pp collisions. The azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production relative to the event plane is

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Electroweak boson measurements in $p$+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions with ATLAS [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of 7th Annual Conference on Large Hadron Collider Physics — PoS(LHCP2019), 2019
Electroweak bosons produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies are excellent probes of the collision geometry and centrality. In proton-nucleus collisions, they provide insight into cold nuclear matter effects such as nuclear modifications of parton distribution functions or initial-state parton energy loss.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
