Usefulness of PCR for Diagnosis of Imported Malaria in Poland
European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, 2002The aim of the present study was to use the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect and identify Plasmodium spp. in diagnostic specimens, especially in those from patients diagnosed by microscopy as having possible mixed infections, and in those demonstrating low parasitemia or those that were parasite-negative.

[Diagnosis of malaria by allele-specific PCR].
[Rinsho ketsueki] The Japanese journal of clinical hematology, 1999Malaria is relatively rare in Japan. Of 13 patients referred to our laboratory for malarial screening in the past 4 years, malarial parasites were detected in 8. Conventional screening procedures commonly detect hepatic dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, elevated LDH activity, and increased CRP levels in malaria patients.

We report three cases of congenital malaria involving two malarial immune mothers living in Spain. Diagnostic PCR and Genotyping PCR for merozoite surface proteins 1 and 2 were essential to show that mothers and new-borns had different Plasmodium population parasites at the moment of the delivery, and that the infection was acquired earlier in ...

[Application of nested PCR in diagnosis of imported malaria].
Zhongguo ji sheng chong xue yu ji sheng chong bing za zhi = Chinese journal of parasitology & parasitic diseases, 2012To evaluate the usefulness of nested PCR method in the diagnosis of imported malaria.A total of 210 blood smears and blood samples on filter paper were taken from persons returned from highly malaria endemic countries. The results of both nested PCR and microscopy for 210 samples were compared.Among the 210 persons, 43 were hospitalized due to malaria,

[Diagnosis of imported malaria with multiplex PCR on LighCycler apparatus].
Pathologie-biologie, 2003For the diagnosis of imported malaria, a competitive multiplex PCR using LightCycler was developed and compared for 3 months with a traditional PCR method. Hundred eighty three patients were tested by these 2 techniques of molecular diagnosis: 60 were positive for P. falciparum, 9 were positive for other Plasmodium species and 114 were negative.

Fecal samples fail in PCR-based diagnosis of malaria parasite infection in birds
Conservation Genetics Resources, 2014Malaria parasites are common in wild vertebrates on all warm continents and have recently been isolated from wild apes by non-invasive fecal sampling. Here, we examined the utility of fecal samples for malaria parasite detection in wild birds. We collected both blood and fecal samples from 56 birds sampled in the field, extracted DNA from all samples ...

Comparison of two commercial assays and microscopy with PCR for diagnosis of malaria.
Journal of the Egyptian Society of Parasitology, 2008This study compared conventional PCR with microscopy and 2 rapid detection methods, the pLDH which detected lactic dehydrogenase enzyme produced by actively metabolizing organisms and the malaria antibody tests. The sensitivity of PCR was 1 parasite/microl, i.e.: 50 times more sensitive than microscopy.

We have previously reported on development of a simple PCR-based method to detect Plasmodium falciparum in which patient blood samples are lysed and then filtered onto paper. The present studies, conducted in Thailand, were designed to identify factors contributing to differences between results from microscopy and PCR.

[Diagnosis of an imported falciparum malaria case by fluorescence quantitative PCR].
Zhongguo ji sheng chong xue yu ji sheng chong bing za zhi = Chinese journal of parasitology & parasitic diseases, 2015The whole blood sample from a patient with imported falciparum malaria was tested by microscopic examination and fluorescence quantitative PCR. Microscopic examination results showed that Plasmodium falciparum parasites were found in the thick and thin blood films with a low parasite density of 240 parasite/microl of blood. The specific DNA fragment of
