Microfluidic Molecular Diagnostic Chips: Functional Modules, Integration Strategies, and Emerging Applications

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review delivers an engineering‐centric analysis of microfluidic molecular diagnostic chips, breaking them down into foundational modules from fluid manipulation to bio‐sensing. Beyond chip design, it evaluates sample‐to‐answer integration strategies and commercial readiness levels.

Serum angiopoietin-1 and -2 levels discriminate cerebral malaria from uncomplicated malaria and predict clinical outcome in African children. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
BACKGROUND: Limited tools exist to identify which individuals infected with Plasmodium falciparum are at risk of developing serious complications such as cerebral malaria (CM). The objective of this study was to assess serum biomarkers that differentiate

PERFORMANCE OF MULTIPLEX REAL TIME PCR FOR DIAGNOSIS MALARIA IN FOREST ENDEMIC AREAS IN TANAH BUMBU REGENCY SOUTH KALIMANTAN PROVINCE INDONESIA [PDF]

open access: yes
and Figures Keywords: ABSTRACT performance-multiplex real time PCR-forest malaria Malaria incidence has declined in Indonesia for years, but it is still found a foci malaria in forest areas. Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) has been used as a diagnostic tool

Unraveling Occurrence Patterns and Diversity of Avian Malaria Parasites in Iberian Obligate and Facultative Scavenger Birds

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Low overall haemosporidian occurrence (3.4%; 13/383). Unexpected high lineage diversity (10 new host–parasite interactions). Novel Leucocytozoon lineage (GYPBAR01) in all European vultures except the griffon vulture. Plasmodium relictum (lineage SGS1) in adult red kites.

Analysis of malaria diagnosis discrepancies between RDTs and microscopy by nested PCR

open access: yesJournal of Biomedical Science and Engineering, 2013
A total of 415 samples from febrile children exhibiting either concordant (n = 108) or discordant (n = 307) results between microscopy, the gold standard diagnostic test, and two Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs), OptiMAL-IT?(pLDH) and Acon?HRP2, were analysed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from May to December 2011 in Gabon.

Simultaneous detection of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes in clinical isolates by multiplex-nested RT-PCR

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2012
Background Gametocyte carriage is essential for malaria transmission and endemicity of disease; thereby it is a target for malaria control strategies. Malaria-infected individuals may harbour gametocytes below the microscopic detection threshold that can

Illness in Children Presenting to the Emergency Department After International Travel: A 10‐Year Retrospective Analysis From the University Hospital of Helsinki, Finland

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim We characterized infections after international travel and identified predictors of severe infection to refine management. Methods We conducted a retrospective cross‐sectional analysis of children aged 0–18 years presenting to Helsinki University Hospital Emergency Department within 90 days of international travel between January 1, 2015 ...

Comparison of Giemsa microscopy with nested PCR for the diagnosis of malaria in North Gondar, north-west Ethiopia [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2014

Whole blood angiopoietin-1 and -2 levels discriminate cerebral and severe (non-cerebral) malaria from uncomplicated malaria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background Severe and cerebral malaria are associated with endothelial activation. Angiopoietin-1 (ANG-1) and angiopoietin-2 (ANG-2) are major regulators of endothelial activation and integrity.

Dual Host–Pathogen Screening of the Lung During Severe Influenza Using Spatial Transcriptomics

open access: yesImmunology &Cell Biology, EarlyView.
We performed genome‐wide spatial transcriptomics at 10 μm resolution on the lungs of mice infected with influenza A virus. We utilised publicly available scRNAseq reference datasets to identify cell types present. We found viral transcripts across all detected cell types, suggesting localised indiscriminate infection.
