PEARL MILLET

Pearl millet is gaining importance as a climate-resilient and health-promoting nutritious crop. Pearl millet is the most important millet species, accounting for approximately half the total worldwide production of millets. It is mainly cultivated in India and Africa and is uniquely tolerant of hot and dry conditions.

Cytogenetics of pearl millet

The somatic karyotype of pearl millet Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke. (2n = 14) has been studied in several cultivars, but few cytological markers have been discovered which could help in the easy identification of the chromosomes. Analysis of pachytene bivalents permits such identification but is feasible only in a few cultivars.
