A Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl Complex Disrupts Actin Cytoskeleton Assembly and Blocks Cytokinesis

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 134, Issue 27, July 4, 2022., 2022
The dinuclear RuII complex [(Ru(phen)2)2(tpphz)]4+ binds to G‐actin monomers, preventing assembly into F‐actin. This inhibits actin fibre assemblies within live cells and causes disruption to late cytokinesis by interfering with the function of endosomal sorting complexes required for transport (ESCRT) during abscission.

Longitudinal Study on Seasonal Variation of Marine Biotoxins and Related Harmful Algae in Bivalve Mollusks Bred in Sardinia (Italy, W Mediterranean Sea) from 2015 to 2020 and Assessment of Potential Public Health Risks

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2021
Annual and interannual dynamics of shellfish toxins and associated harmful algal species (HAS) were analyzed from 2015 to 2020 in Tortolì Lagoon (Sardinia, west Mediterranean Sea).

A survey of Dinophysis spp. and their potential to cause diarrhetic shellfish poisoning in coastal waters of the United States

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, Volume 59, Issue 4, Page 658-680, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Multiple species of the genus Dinophysis produce diarrhetic shellfish toxins (okadaic acid and Dinophysis toxins, OA/DTXs analogs) and/or pectenotoxins (PTXs). Only since 2008 have DSP events (illnesses and/or shellfish harvesting closures) become recognized as a threat to human health in the United States.

Highlighting the Rich Chemistry of the Allenone Moiety

open access: yesAdvanced Synthesis &Catalysis, Volume 365, Issue 9, Page 1332-1384, May 12, 2023., 2023
Abstract Conjugated and non‐conjugated allenones appear as recurring motifs in organic synthesis, natural products and mechanistic investigations showing unique properties and applications. The ability of allenones to build cycles has provided a direct access to strained systems, medium‐sized rings, arenes, heterocycles and complex polycycles.

The efficacy and safety of high‐pressure processing of food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 20, Issue 3, March 2022., 2022
Abstract High‐pressure processing (HPP) is a non‐thermal treatment in which, for microbial inactivation, foods are subjected to isostatic pressures (P) of 400–600 MPa with common holding times (t) from 1.5 to 6 min. The main factors that influence the efficacy (log10 reduction of vegetative microorganisms) of HPP when applied to foodstuffs are ...

Cytotoxicity and intestinal permeability of phycotoxins assessed by the human Caco-2 cell model

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2023
Phycotoxins are a class of multiple natural metabolites produced by microalgae in marine and freshwater ecosystems that bioaccumulate in food webs, particularly in shellfish, having a great impact on human health.
