Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Effect of neon seeding on the pedestal structure and stability in the JET-ILW deuterium JET-ITER baseline scenario using both ideal and resistive MHD

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
In this work, the effect of neon seeding in the JET-ILW JET-ITER baseline scenario on pedestal structure, global stability and local stability is studied.

Development of Rocking Isolation for Response Mitigation of Elevated Water Tanks under Seismic and Wind Hazards

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2020
Elevated water tanks are categorized as strategic components of water supply systems in modern urban management. Past earthquake events have revealed the high vulnerability of these structures. This paper investigates the development of rocking isolation

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Progress in pedestal and edge physics: Chapter 3 of the special issue: on the path to tokamak burning plasma operation

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
This paper describes the extensive progress that has been made in the understanding of tokamak pedestal physics since the 2007 publication of ‘Progress in the ITER Physics Basis’ (Ikeda 2007 Nucl. Fusion 47 E01–S500).

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

The H-mode pedestal structure and its role on confinement in JET with a carbon and metal wall [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We present the pedestal structure, as determined from the high-resolution Thomson scattering measurements, for a database of low and high triangularity (δ ≈ 0.22-0.39) 2.5 MA, type I ELMy H-mode JET plasmas after the installation of the new ITER-like ...

Approximated Stiffness Coefficients in Rotor Systems Supported by Bearings with Clearance

open access: yesInternational Journal of Rotating Machinery, 2010
Many kinds of rotating machinery are supported by bearings with clearance, which are further clamped in a supporting structure. When designing such machinery it is important to be able to predict dynamics and hence valid models are needed. Due to gravity,

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Postsaturation dynamics and superluminal propagation of a superradiant spike in a free-electron laser amplifier

open access: yesPhysical Review Accelerators and Beams, 2020
We study the dynamics of an isolated spike of radiation in superradiant regime. We show that conditions exist where the pulse moves with a group velocity larger than the velocity of light in vacuum and is followed by a pedestal resulting from a complex ...
