Optimization and Experiment on Parameters for Potato Peeling Using Waterjet Based on Fluid–Structure Interaction

open access: yesAgriculture
To address the prominent issues in current potato peeling processes (such as high labor intensity, excessive flesh loss, hard-to-remove peel from bud eyes/concaves), a non-contact waterjet method was proposed.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Mechanical peeling of pumpkins. Part 2: Modeling of peeling process

open access: yes, 2008
A novel mechanical peeling process using an abrasive-cutter brush which applies both abrasive and cutting forces was modeled. An energy consumption model of the peeling process is required to optimize the main influential factors as well as to limit ...

The Impact of Peeling on Highland Barley’s Digestive Properties: In Vitro and In Vivo Insights

open access: yesFoods
Highland barley is a low-glycemic-index grain, and its slow-digesting starch can help delay or prevent the onset and progression of type Ⅱ diabetes.

Modeling nanoribbon peeling [PDF]

open access: yesNanoscale, 2019
Lifting and peeling of 2D materials and nanoribbons off surfaces is common in nanoscience. Solution of an analytical model shows that structural lubricity makes the peeling of a nanoribbon or film radically different from the standard description of peeling of immobile, fully glued films.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) in the evaluation of the clinical manifestations of psoriasis

open access: yesVestnik Dermatologii i Venerologii, 2017
Psoriasis is one of the most prevalent chronic inflammatory skin diseases. The severity of its clinical manifestations can vary greatly. Objective assessment of psoriasis severity is required to select an adequate therapy.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Rational production of veneer by IR-heating of green wood during peeling: Modeling experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Heating green wood logs by infrared (IR) radiation during peeling for veneer production has been numerically simulated, focusing on the heating kinetics of a green wood cylinder rotating with a decreasing radius.
