Automated image analysis of iron-ore pellet structure using optical microscopy

open access: yes, 2011
Knowledge about pellet microstructure such as porosity and oxidation degree is essential in improving the pellet macro-behavior such as structural integrity and reduction properties. Manual optical microscopy is commonly used to find such information but

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Prediction of pellet mass thresholds for ELM triggering in low-collisionality, ITER-like discharges

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
In ITER, pellets are calculated to require more than 8 times the mass than currently planned to reliably trigger edge-localized modes (ELMs). Unmitigated heat flux impulses from ELMs are intolerable in ITER at full power and current.

MITF maintains genome stability in nonmelanocyte lineages

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
MITF is essential for melanocyte survival and acts as an oncogene in 10%–20% of melanomas. We show that MITF depletion causes genome instability in nonmelanocytic cells, leading to LATS2‐mediated P53 activation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. This study highlights the role of MITF as a genome maintenance factor beyond the melanocyte lineage. Created

Multi-pellet injection into the NBI-heated phase of TJ-II plasmas

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
A pellet-induced enhanced confinement (PiEC) phase, with general characteristics similar to those reported for the stellarator W7-X, is observed after single pellet injection (>10 ^19 H atoms) into the neutral beam injection heated phase of plasmas in ...

Oncogenic DMTF1β promotes cancer cell motility by regulating autophagy through ULK1 stabilization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the current study, we demonstrate that the oncogene DMTF1β regulates ULK1 stability by reducing its proteasomal degradation in cancer cells. This stabilization enables ULK1 to induce autophagy, which in turn facilitates cancer cell migration. Consequently, reduced DMTF1β levels lead to decreased autophagy and impaired cancer cell migration.

Simple Model of Pellet Combustion in Retort Burner

open access: yes, 2015
Combustion of the solid fuel in the burner is an important issue when discussing the CFD simulation of combustion in automatic boiler. In the present work is employed a simplified method for modeling the fuel bed, which is based on mass and heat balances
