Research on new antibiotics is engaged in at present throughout the world with such intensity that one must be able to compare cultures of organisms producing such antibiotics, as well as the isolated substances themselves, if one is to avoid needless duplication and great confusion.

AbstractTo control sequential public bad productions under imperfect monitoring, this paper proposes a penalty lottery: a violator passes the responsibility of the fine to the next potential violator with some probability and pays all the accumulated fines with the complementary probability.

Looking at the earnings profiles of men and women after their first child is born, a number of studies establish that women suffer a larger penalty in earnings than men–a child penalty. Leveraging randomness in the sex of the first birth, we show that the child penalty in the UK is larger when the first born child is a girl.

This paper investigates the economic implications of applying different sanctions, notably criminal penalties, the suspension or revocation of licences and administrative fines to environmental regulatory contraventions. Using familiar economics of law enforcement models, we predict that the almost exclusive reliance by British environment agencies on ...

All the major players in the workstation and personal computer market are committed to RISC. The author looks at the view that RISC is not better, and does not hold the key to high speed computing. He claims that the only reason this foolishness has got so far is that the real differences between RISC and complex-instruction-set computing (CISC) are ...

We present a simple algorithm to compute continuous penalty forces to determine collision response between rigid and deformable models bounded by triangle meshes. Our algorithm computes a well-behaved solution in contrast to the traditional stability and robustness problems of penalty methods, induced by force discontinuities. We trace contact features

The Penalty of Professionalism
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1969As physicians, all of us are well aware and justifiably proud of the advantages of being members of our profession. The conscientious physician probably gets more downright satisfaction out of his work than members of any other field. He also receives more respect and admiration from his fellowman. The reason for both—his personal satisfaction and the

What’s the real penalty in penalty analysis?
Food Quality and Preference, 2013Abstract Traditional penalty analysis (TPA) is an application meant to help product developers better understand product strengths and weaknesses. TPA uses just-about-right (JAR) attributes in conjunction with a “reference” variable such as overall liking to assign “penalties” to a product for being “too low/weak” or “too high/strong” in some aspect.
