The Swinging Pendulum

JAMA Surgery, 2015
After the landmark National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project–B27 study, which showed no survival difference between mastectomy and lumpectomy with radiation, breast conservationsurgery (BCS)emergedas thepreferredoption for early-stagecancers.1,2 This ledtoasteady increase in BCS, but the seminal article in this issue by Kummerow et al3 ...

Chelomei's pendulum explained

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2001
Summary: Chelomei's pendulum has a sliding disc on its rod, and is mounted on a support that vibrates vertically with small amplitude and high frequency. In 1982, V. N. Chelomei demonstrated experimentally that a configuration can be stable where the pendulum points against gravity, and the disc 'floats' on the rod.

Single-Molecule Torsional Pendulum

Science, 2005
We have built a torsional pendulum based on an individual single-walled carbon nanotube, which is used as a torsional spring and mechanical support for the moving part. The moving part can be rotated by an electric field, resulting in large but fully elastic torsional deformations of the nanotube.

The Shuddering Pendulum

Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2011
We partly quote from the abstract of this extensive paper on the rich mathematical structure of the nonlinear second order ODE \[ \ddot\theta+2\nu\dot\theta+\theta=f(t)\sin\theta. \tag{\(\ast\)} \] It describes the behavior of an elastically restrained simple pendulum subject to a downward force of magnitude \(f(t)\) applied to its bob with \(\dot f(t)>

Shoulder pendulum exerciser

The American Journal of Surgery, 1955
Abstract 1. 1. The importance of early pendulum exercises is stressed in conditions in or about the shoulder. 2. 2. A pendulum exerciser is described which will relieve muscle spasm and pain while the patient performs shoulder pendulum exercises efficiently. 3. 3.
