A simple, low-cost, data-logging pendulum built from a computer mouse

open access: yes, 2009
Lessons and homework problems involving a pendulum are often a big part of introductory physics classes and laboratory courses from high school to undergraduate levels.

Nonlocomotory Robotic Strategies for Dynamic Rotation Control in Terrestrial Robots: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Terrestrial robots increasingly require rapid body rotation to maintain stability and agility in complex environments. This review shows nonlocomotory rotational control strategies that operate without ground contact, including reaction wheels, tails, bars, limbs, and thrusters.

The dynamics of the pendulum suspended on the forced Duffing oscillator [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We investigate the dynamics of the pendulum suspended on the forced Duffing oscillator. The detailed bifurcation analysis in two parameter space (amplitude and frequency of excitation) which presents both oscillating and rotating periodic solutions of ...

Asymmetry in Skipping Enhances Viability Against Control Input Noise

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Quadruped animals use asymmetric galloping gaits at high speeds, yet the functional role of this asymmetry remains unclear. This study shows that left–right asymmetry in touchdown angles enhances robustness to control noise. Using a simple two‐legged locomotion model and viability theory, it demonstrates that asymmetric skipping substantially enlarges ...

COMPARISON OF THREE METHODS TO DETERMINE THE INERTIAL PROPERTIES OF FREE-FLYING DYNAMICALLY SIMILAR MODELS [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Engineering Science and Technology, 2016
Inertial characteristics of the flying vehicle play an important role in dynamics of the vehicle. Therefore, experimental determination of the moments of inertia (MI) is one of the main tasks to define the accurate mathematical model.

Evaluation of the Damping Associated to Reciprocating Movement of a Double-Cone Travelling on Straight or Curved Divergent-Convergent Rails

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2022
Damping characteristics of the mechanism consisted of a double-cone, travelling on straight and curved rails, have great influence on the hunting motion of railway vehicles, and on the efficiency of wave-powered electrical generators.

Light‑Driven Propulsion of Graphene Aerogels in Microgravity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ultralight graphene aerogels convert laser light into thrust. Parabolic‐flight experiments directly compare their motion in microgravity and at 1 g, revealing order‐of‐magnitude enhancements in distance, velocity, and transient thrust when weight and friction are removed (∼50 times enhancement).

Characterization of disturbance sources for LISA: torsion pendulum results

open access: yes, 2004
A torsion pendulum allows ground-based investigation of the purity of free-fall for the LISA test masses inside their capacitive position sensor. This paper presents recent improvements in our torsion pendulum facility that have both increased the ...

Complex elliptic pendulum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper briefly summarizes previous work on complex classical mechanics and its relation to quantum mechanics. It then introduces a previously unstudied area of research involving the complex particle trajectories associated with elliptic potentials.

Predicting Performance of Hall Effect Ion Source Using Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
This study introduces HallNN, a machine learning tool for predicting Hall effect ion source performance using a neural network ensemble trained on data generated from numerical simulations. HallNN provides faster and more accurate predictions than numerical methods and traditional scaling laws, making it valuable for designing and optimizing Hall ...
