Pennyroyal Oil Poisoning and Hepatotoxicity
JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association, 1979PENNYROYAL oil has been used in folklore medicine for many years as an abortifacient and as a means to induce menstruation.1Herbal medicine books currently in health food stores mention its use as an abortifacient and recommend its use for various minor ailments. We report two recent cases of pennyroyal oil ingestion for the purpose of abortion. One of

Mentha pulegium and M. cervina are traditionally used in Alentejo to flavour fish and “açordas” recipes, as well as for medicinal purposes. The essential oil has also industrial applications in foods conservation. M. pulegium is still common in nature, but M. cervina has been disappearing due to excessive collection, overgrazing and habitat destruction.

Pennyroyal oil toxicosis in a dog
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1992A dog was treated for fleas with the application of pennyroyal oil obtained by the owner at a health food store. Vomiting ensued within 2 hours, and despite emergency treatment, the dog died within 48 hours. At necropsy, pennyroyal oil was determined to be the cause of death.

Mitigation of Pennyroyal Oil Hepatotoxicity in the Mouse
Academic Emergency Medicine, 2003Abstract Objectives: Pennyroyal oil ingestion has been associated with severe hepatotoxicity and death. The primary constituent, R‐(+)‐pulegone, is metabolized via hepatic cytochrome P450 to toxic intermediates. The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of the specific cytochrome P450 inhibitors disulfiram and cimetidine to mitigate ...

Biological activities of pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium L.) in broilers
Livestock Science, 2012Abstract This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium L.) levels (0, 0.25 or 0.50%) on the growth performance and Escherichia coli and lactic acid bacteria count in the jejunum of broilers. A total of 150 broiler chicks (Ross 308), obtained from a commercial hatchery at 1 day of age, were allocated to 3 ...

Quantitative Determination of Pulegone in Pennyroyal Oil by FT-IR Spectroscopy
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2009Pulegone constitutes a monoterpene occurring in Mentha species and primarily in Mentha pulegium L. (pennyroyal). A major source of human exposure to pulegone is the use of pennyroyal essential oil in flavorings, confectionery and cosmetics. The rapid quantification of pulegone in hydrodistilled pennyroyal oils (which were also "spiked" to increase the ...

Mathematical modelling and simulation of pennyroyal essential oil supercritical extraction
Chemical Engineering Science, 2000Abstract Pennyroyal essential oil was isolated by supercritical fluid extraction and fractional separation. Extractions were performed at three different mean particle sizes (0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mm) and three CO 2 flow rates (0.31, 0.43, and 0.62 g/s) and at p =100 bar and T =323 K. Essential oil yield was determined as a function of time. Yield data
