Pepsinogen

Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, 1987
Pepsin is a potent proteolytic enzyme stored and secreted by chief cells in an inactive precursor form, pepsinogen. Its secretion is modulated by both cAMP and calcium-dependent mechanisms. Abnormalities in levels of pepsinogen and its various isozymogens have been linked clinically, epidemiologically, and experimentally to peptic ulcer disease and ...

THE CONTROL OF PEPSINOGEN SECRETION*

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1967
SummaryThe peptic cell makes and secretes a protein (pepsinogen) and the cellular mechanisms governing the rate of synthesis and its relation to secretion are described and schematically illustrated. The peptic cell as a system secreting protein exists side by side with the parietal cell transporting H+, Cl, water and electrolytes.

Structural studies on pepsinogen and pepsin tryptic digests of pepsinogen and pepsin

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure, 1967
Reduced-carboxymethylated pepsinogen and pepsin were digested with trypsin. The peptides were separated on Sephadex G-25. Four fractions were obtained, designated as A, B, C, and D. Nearly identical proportions of amino acids were found in Fractions A and D of the two digests indicating that A and D of the pepsinogen digest originate from the pepsin ...

Cell-specific hypomethylation of the pepsinogen gene in pepsinogen-producing cells

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1988
The pepsinogen gene is hypomethylated in the stomach, in which it is expressed. For demonstration that this hypomethylation of the pepsinogen gene in the stomach reflects pepsinogen-producing cells, we analyzed fractions of dispersed mucosal cells with various contents of pepsinogen-producing cells prepared from guinea pig stomach by centrifugal ...

Intramolecular Activation of Pepsinogen

1977
Two pathways for pepsinogen activation have been demonstrated. Intramolecular activation, which is kinetically first-order, predominates over the autocatalytic pathway if the pH is below 3 and the protein concentration is less than 1 mg/ml during activation.

Serum pepsinogen I levels in relation to pepsinogen phenotypes.

Progress in clinical and biological research, 1985
Serum PG I levels were measured by an enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA) in 567 blood donors and 171 patients from a routine gastroscopy program to study the relationship between PG I phenotypes and serum levels. In normal subjects no association was found between PG I phenotypes and serum levels.

Pepsins and Pepsinogens

1992
Early in the nineteenth century, proteins as a class of substances present in animal and vegetable tissues were distinguished from fats and carbohydrates by the fact that they coagulated when heated. At approximately the same time, the ability of gastric juice to dissolve coagulated proteins was found to be the result of the presence of a ferment ...
