Joint speech/audio coding based scalable perceptual audio coding
2014 IEEE/ACIS 13th International Conference on Computer and Information Science (ICIS), 2014With the technical evolution of global mobile communications, various heterogeneous communication environments, frequently fluctuant bandwidth and multiform signals put new challenges to coding technology of multimedia signals. Scalable Audio Coding (SAC) can provide smooth transition between different coding qualities, which is an optimal choice for ...

Multiple description perceptual audio coding with correlating transforms
IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing, 2000In audio communication over a lossy packet network, concealment techniques are used to mitigate the effects of lost packets. This concealment is markedly improved if the compressed representation retains redundancy to aid in the estimation of lost information.

Perceptual Audio Coding - A History and Timeline
Conference Record of the Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers, 2007Perceptual Audio Coding, now a very common technology, is a classic example of a technology that arose in several places simultaneously when the "time was right". Here, we will mostly discuss the timeline from the point of view of the people who worked on and about perceptual coding (both audio and video) at AT&T Bell Labs and its successor AT&T Labs ...

Transparent bitrate estimation for perceptual audio coding
2009 4th IEEE Conference on Industrial Electronics and Applications, 2009In this paper, the relationship between the features of the input audio and its corresponding transparent bitrate is studied. This relationship can be used to pre-estimate the transparent bitrate required for an input audio file, so that this bitrate can be used for encoding and the transparent quality can be achieved with the minimum compressed file ...

A differential perceptual audio coding method with reduced bitrate requirements
IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing, 1995A new audio transform coding technique is proposed that reduces the bitrate requirements of the perceptual transform audio coders by utilizing the stationarity characteristics of the audio signals. The method detects the frames that have significant audible content and codes them in a way similar to conventional perceptual transform coders.

On Integer MDCT for Perceptual Audio Coding
IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing, 2007In MPEG-4 scalable lossless coding (SLS) which was recently published as an ISO standard in June 2006, the integer modified discrete cosine transform (IntMDCT) was adopted to enable efficient lossless reconstruction. In addition, there is an MDCT filterbank which is inherent to the advanced audio coding (AAC) core that is present in the SLS codec.

A progressive approach for perceptual audio coding
2000 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo. ICME2000. Proceedings. Latest Advances in the Fast Changing World of Multimedia (Cat. No.00TH8532), 2002A progressive approach to perceptual audio coding is presented in this paper. In contrast with existing perceptual audio coding schemes where the digital audio signal is encoded at a fixed bit rate, the progressive approach achieves fully embedded audio coding whose bit rate can be controlled dynamically, making it useful in audio networking ...

Perceptual component selection in sinusoidal coding of audio
2001 IEEE Fourth Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (Cat. No.01TH8564), 2002This paper presents a new method for selecting the sinusoids in a hybrid audio signal model consisting of sinusoidal, transient, and noise (STN) components. The method relies on a new methodology for ranking and selection of the most perceptually relevant sinusoids.

Enhancing the Quality of Coded Audio Using Perceptual Criteria
2005 IEEE 7th Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing, 2005Code excited linear predictive (CELP) coding standards often fail to properly represent non-speech signals because they are inherently optimized for speech. Most modern CELP coders include provisions for the inclusion of indirect perceptual criteria to counteract this problem; however no direct psychoacoustic models are employed.

Efficient bit assignment strategy for perceptual audio coding
2003 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2003. Proceedings. (ICASSP '03)., 2004For the purpose of efficient audio coding at low rates, a new bit allocation strategy is proposed in this paper. The basic idea behind this approach is "Give bits to the band with the maximum NMR-Gain/bit" or "Retrieve bits from the band with the maximum bits/NMR-Loss". The notion of "bit-use efficiency" is suggested and it can be employed to construct
