An analysis of perceptual artifacts in MPEG scalable audio coding
Proceedings DCC 2002. Data Compression Conference, 2003We study coding artifacts in MPEG-compressed scalable audio. Specifically, we consider the MPEG advanced audio coder (AAC) using bit slice scalable arithmetic coding (BSAC) as implemented in the MPEG 4 reference software. First, we perform human subjective testing using the comparison category rating (CCR) approach, quantitatively comparing the ...

Study on Rounding Errors of INTMDCT in Perceptual Audio Coding
Seventh IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia (ISM'05), 2006With the proliferation of broadband access and continuous decline of storage prize per gigabyte, there has been an increasing demand of audio solution that provides high sampling rate and high resolution. Lossless audio is undoubtedly the ultimate solution.

Schemes for error resilient streaming of perceptually coded audio
2003 International Conference on Multimedia and Expo. ICME '03. Proceedings (Cat. No.03TH8698), 2003This paper presents novel extensions to our earlier system for streaming perceptually coded audio over error prone channels such as Mobile IP. To improve error robustness while maintaining bandwidth efficiency, the new extensions combine the strength of an error resilient coding scheme in the sender, a prioritized packet transport scheme in the network

Perceptual Audio Coding of Speech Signals
2008Traditionally algorithms for speech coding exploit the features of speech signals by employing algorithmic models of the human vocal tract. More recently, the use of generic audio coders for coding of speech signals has gained increasing importance.

Perceptual Audio Coding Using Sinusoidal/Optimum Wavelet Representation
Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing, 2002A perceptual audio coder, in which each audio segment is adaptively analyzed using either a sinusoidal or an optimum wavelet basis according to the time-varying characteristics of the audio signals, has been constructed. The basis optimization is achieved by a novel switched filter bank scheme, which switches between a uniform filter bank structure

Perceptually -Weighted Audio Coding that Scales to Extremely Low Bitrates
Data Compression Conference (DCC'06), 2006A perceptually scalable audio coder generates a bit-stream that contains layers of audio fidelity and is encoded in such a way that adding one of these layers enhances the reconstructed audio by an amount that is just noticeable by the listener. Such algorithms have applications like music on demand at variable levels of fidelity for 3G and 4G cellular

Neural-based approach to perceptual sparse coding of audio signals
The 2010 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN), 2010We propose a neural architecture for the perceptual sparse coding of audio signals based on a previously proposed technique called Local Competitive Algorithm (LCA) that was originally applied to image and video coding. LCAs are designed to be implemented in a dynamical system composed of many neuron-like elements operating in parallel.

Subband audio coding with synthesis filters minimizing a perceptual distortion
1997 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2002The design of filter banks for source coding purposes classically relies on the perfect reconstruction (PR) property. However, several studies have shown that taking the quantization noise into account in the design could yield a noticeable reduction of the mean square reconstruction error.

Perceptual coding of narrow-band audio signals at low rates
IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing, 2006This paper describes a coding paradigm using coding tools based on the characteristics of the human hearing system so as to accommodate a wide range of narrow-band audio inputs without annoying artifacts at low rates (down to 8 kb/s). The narrow-band perceptual audio coder (NPAC) employs a variety of algorithms to account for the perceptually ...

Wideband Speech and Audio Coding in the Perceptual Domain
2005A new critical band auditory filterbank with superior auditory masking properties is proposed and is applied to wideband speech and audio coding. The analysis and synthesis are performed in the perceptual domain using this filterbank. The outputs of the analysis filters are processed to obtain a series of pulse trains that represent neural firing ...
