The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Magnetic-field enhancement of performance of superconducting nanowire single-photon detector

open access: yes, 2018
We present SNSPDs from NbN nanowires shaped after square-spiral that allows an increase not only in critical currents but also an extension of spectral detection efficiencies by just applying an external magnetic field.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Combining textured insoles and compelled body weight shift improves lower limb function and gait in individuals with stroke: a randomised controlled trial

open access: yesHuman Movement
Purpose To assess the effects of combining textured insoles (TI; plantar somatosensory stimulation) with compelled body weight shift (CBWS) on lower limb motor function, gait, and sensory function in stroke patients.

Passive Heat Exposure Alters Perception and Executive Function

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
Findings regarding the influence of passive heat exposure on cognitive function remain equivocal due to a number of methodological issues including variation in the domains of cognition examined.

Performance management system enhancement and maintenance [PDF]

open access: yes
The research described in this report concludes a two-year effort to develop a Performance Management System (PMS) for the NCC computers. PMS provides semi-automated monthly reports to NASA and contractor management on the status and performance of the ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

A survey of hormone replacement therapy use among resistance-trained women across states of menopause transition – a preliminary analysis

open access: yesJournal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition
Background Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is considered the gold standard for management of vasomotor symptoms. It can also help improve bone health, potentially reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
