The effect of carnosine or β-alanine supplementation on markers of glycaemic control and insulin resistance in human and animal studies: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesSystematic Reviews, 2020
Background Diabetes is a major public health issue and there is a need to develop low-cost, novel interventions to prevent or reduce disease progression. Growing evidence shows that supplementation with carnosine, or its rate-limiting precursor β-alanine,

Performance Enhancement of Fuzzy Logic Duty Ratio Controller Based Direct Torque Control of Induction Motor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper presents reduction of torque ripples in an Induction Motor with DTC by duty cycle controller. The numbers of vectors are increased beyond the available eight discrete voltage vectors are used in this paper without increasing the number of ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Chronological age and biological maturity are separately positively associated with inhibitory control and working memory in boys and girls

open access: yesFrontiers in Cognition
Executive function is typically considered from a chronological age perspective, despite the influence of biological maturity on executive function development.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure improves balance ability in sedentary young adults

open access: yesPhysiotherapy Quarterly
Introduction Exercising with a game console is a novel type of exercise. One game that is currently popular is Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure, but its impact on balancing ability in young adults who are sedentary has yet to be investigated. This study aimed

Multi-Stage Fitness Test Performance, V˙O2 Peak and Adiposity: Effect on Risk Factors for Cardio-Metabolic Disease in Adolescents

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2019
The role of physical activity in determining the metabolic health of adolescents is poorly understood, particularly concerning the effect on low-grade chronic inflammation (chronic elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and acute ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
