Kinetic Approach to Nixtamalization of Corn Pericarp [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The nixtamalization of the pericarp isolated from grains of corn was studied with 2, 5, 10, 20 and 40% Ca(OH)2 based upon the mass of the pericarp. For 2 and 5% Ca(OH)2 a small loss of the mass of the pericarp takes place quickly which is accompanied by ...

Morphoanatomy and ontogeny of fruit in Bromeliaceae species Morfoanatomia e ontogenia de fruto em espécies de Bromeliaceae

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2010
This study aims to give an overall view of fruit structure in Bromeliaceae, since these studies are extremely scarce in this family, showing the morphology, anatomy and ontogeny of fruits of six species belonging to six different genera, representing ...

Tree Squirrels Selectively Disperse High‐Quality Acorns Away From Tree Trunks

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Acorn quality and squirrel feeding behavior significantly structured spatial dispersal patterns of two Californian oak species. Non‐infested acorns were preferentially selected for embryo excision and dispersed farther than infested ones. Acorns were fully consumed near tree trunks, signaling rapid feeding in safe refuges, whereas non‐eaten, partially ...

Inheritance of quantitative traits of the rice hybrid F2-F3 Svetly × Mavr

open access: yesЗерновое хозяйство России, 2020
Rice can form not only white, but also red, brown and black kernels. In black rice, pericarp kernels contain anthocyanin, which has an antioxidant effect and is beneficial to human health. The current paper is devoted to the development of new rice lines

Bridging the Late Antique Gap in Northwest Arabia: New Archaeological Evidence on the Occupation of Wādī al‐Qurā (al‐ʿUlā [AlUla], Saudi Arabia) Between the Third and Seventh Centuries CE

open access: yesArabian Archaeology and Epigraphy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In 2019, the Dadan Archaeological Project (CNRS/RCU/AFALULA) identified a Late Antique village 1 km south of ancient Dadan in the al‐ʿUlā valley (northwest Saudi Arabia). Three excavation seasons at this site (2021–2023) have uncovered a massive building constructed in the late third or early fourth cent.

Nanomechanical, Structural and Antioxidant Characterization of Nixtamalized Popcorn Pericarp

open access: yes, 2022
Expanded popcorn grain is widely consumed as a healthy snack all around the world; however, the study of the behavior of its components by processes such as nixtamalization is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this work was to characterize the nanomechanical,

Climatic factors, landscape composition and host plant traits co‐drive fruit infestation of unmanaged walnut trees by the invasive pest fly Rhagoletis completa (Cresson, 1929) (Diptera: Tephritidae)

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
The study examined multiscale factors influencing walnut fruit infestations by the invasive pest fly Rhagoletis completa. Infestation rates increased with fruit size, host tree abundance, grasslands, hedgerows and temperatures, but decreased with anthropogenic habitats and heavy spring rainfall.
