Preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) is a condition that can lead to maternal, fetal, and neonatal morbidity and mortality. It happens in 3% of pregnancies and is the cause of one-third of the total number of preterm births. An infection has been implicated both as a common underlying cause and a consequence of PPROM.
