Mechanical Response Mechanism and Yield Characteristics of Coal Under Quasi-Static and Dynamic Loading

open access: yesApplied Sciences
During deep mining engineering, coal bodies are subjected to complex geological stresses such as periodic roof pressure and blasting impacts, which may induce mechanical property deterioration and trigger severe rock burst accidents.

Spheroid Cell Aggregation Enhanced by Enzyme‐Free Ultrasound‐Detached Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that ultrasound‐based, enzyme‐free cell detachment accelerates spheroid formation by preserving surface proteins, reducing variability, and enhancing cell aggregation. Comparable engraftment and improved spatial organization in co‐cultured spheroids are observed.

Modelling Atherosclerotic Plaque Cap Mechanics: Microcalcifications Reduce Mechanical Properties in Mesenchymal Stromal Cell‐Based Model

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
This study develops a tissue‐engineered model of the atherosclerotic cap using human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). After 2 weeks of culture to produce a collagenous matrix, a mineralizing medium induces microcalcifications over 4 weeks. These constructs, imaged with second harmonic generation microscopy, lead to reduced ultimate stress at rupture ...

Microphysiological Glomerular Filtration Barriers: Current Insights, Innovations, and Future Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) is the first step of blood filtration by the kidneys. The concerning increase of kidney diseases makes the development of new models essential. In this context, microphysiological glomerular filtration barriers focus on closely reproducing the physiological architecture of the in vivo GFB: podocytes, glomerular ...

Soft‐Layered Composites with Wrinkling‐Activated Multi‐Linear Elastic Behavior, Stress Mitigation, and Enhanced Strain Energy Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, exciting new bi‐/multi‐linear elastic behavior of soft elastic composites that accompany the activation of wrinkling in the embedded interfacial layers is analyzed. The new features and performance of these composite materials, including dramatic enhancements in energy storage, can be tailored by the concentration of interfacial layers ...

A constitutive law for cross-linked actin networks by homogenization techniques

open access: yes, 2010
Inspired by experiments on the actin driven propulsion of micrometer sized beads we develop and study a minimal mechanical model of a two-dimensional network of stiff elastic filaments grown from the surface of a cylinder.
