Structure and Function of a Multi‐Megadalton Virus‐Like Proteolytic Dodecahedron

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Zuzalysin, a virulence metallopeptidase of the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, is secreted as a latent, flexible ≈95‐kDa monomer. Calcium triggers cysteine‐switch activation and hierarchical assembly into pentamers, bipentamers, tripentamers, and a ≈5.6‐MDa, ≈355‐Å dodecahedron. Structures at 1.8–3.6 Å reveal a virus‐sized catalytic cage

Intracellular periodontal pathogen exploits recycling pathway to exit from infected cells

open access: yesCellular Microbiology, 2016
Although human gingival epithelium prevents intrusions by periodontal bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, the most well‐known periodontal pathogen, is able to invade gingival epithelial cells and pass through the epithelial barrier into deeper tissues ...

Characterization of an α-L-fucosidase from the periodontal pathogen Tannerella forsythia

open access: yesVirulence, 2015
The periodontal pathogen Tannerella forsythia expresses several glycosidases which are linked to specific growth requirements and are involved in the invasion of host tissues.

Periodontal health [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
OBJECTIVES To date there is a paucity of documentation regarding definitions of periodontal health. This review considers the histological and clinical determinants of periodontal health for both intact and reduced periodontium and seeks to propose ...

A pH‐Switchable Cerium Single‐Atom Enzyme for Peri‐Implantitis Therapy via JAK‐STAT Signaling Axis‐Mediated Macrophage Reprogramming

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A pH‐switchable cerium single‐atom enzyme is developed for stage‐specific peri‐implantitis therapy. Acidic conditions trigger antibacterial peroxidase‐like activity, whereas neutral conditions activate an antioxidant superoxide dismutase ‐ and catalase ‐like enzymatic relay. This microenvironment‐adaptive catalytic strategy suppresses the IL‐6/JAK‐STAT

Assessment of Filifactor alocis and Porphyromonas gingivalis Levels in Subgingival Plaque of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with and without Periodontitis: A Case-Control Study

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research
Introduction: Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory condition, is influenced by microbial dysbiosis and the host’s immune response. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) represents a significant public health challenge in India and exacerbates periodontal ...

Filifactor alocis — a new emerging periodontal pathogen

open access: yesMicrobes and infection, 2015
Filifactor alocis, a previously unrecognized Gram-positive anaerobic rod, is now considered a new emerging pathogen that may play a significant role in periodontal disease. F.

OTUD6A‐Mediated Deubiquitination of PRDX1 Protects Against Oral Ulcer by Restoring Mitochondrial Function

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In human oral keratinocytes, OTUD6A promoted cell migration by deubiquitinating and stabilizing PRDX1. Conversely, OTUD6A deficiency reduced PRDX1 stability, triggering mitochondrial dysfunction and aggravating OU progression. ABSTRACT Oral ulcers (OU), as the most highly prevalent and recurrent oral mucosal lesion, have an unclear pathogenesis that ...

Metatranscriptomic analysis of an in vitro biofilm model reveals strain-specific interactions among multiple bacterial species

open access: yesJournal of Oral Microbiology, 2019
Interactions among bacteria can affect biofilm properties. Method: Here, we investigated the role of different bacteria in functional dysbiosis of an in vitro polymicrobial subgingival plaque model using both 16S rRNA and metatranscriptomic sequencing ...

Selected dietary (poly)phenols inhibit periodontal pathogen growth and biofilm formation.

open access: yesFood & Function, 2015
Periodontitis (PD) is a chronic infectious disease mediated by bacteria in the oral cavity. (Poly)phenols (PPs), ubiquitous in plant foods, possess antimicrobial activities and may be useful in the prevention and management of periodontitis.
