Randomized comparison of popliteal-sciatic perineural catheter tip migration and dislocation in a cadaver model using two catheter designs [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Anesthesiology, 2017
BackgroundNew catheter-over-needle (CON) technology for continuous peripheral nerve blockade has emerged, but its effect on the risk of perineural catheter tip dislocation is unknown.

PARPi Combining Nanoparticle LIN28B siRNA for the Management of Malignant Ascites

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that co‐inhibition of LIN28B and PARP using siLin28b/DSSP@lip‐PEG‐FA nanoparticles in combination with the PARP inhibitor BMN673 effectively suppresses the accumulation of malignant ascites associated with advanced cancers.

Albumin mass balance and kinetics in liver transplantation

open access: yesCritical Care, 2018
Background In major abdominal surgery albumin is shifted from the circulation, presumably leaking into the interstitial space, contributing to a 30–40% decrease in plasma albumin concentration.

Microenvironment Self‐Adaptive Nanoarmor to Address Adhesion‐ and Colonization‐Related Obstacles in Impaired Intestine Promote Bacteriotherapy Against Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A microenvironment self‐adaptive nanoarmor is developed to effectively address the adhesion‐ and colonization‐related challenges posed by multiple physiological and pathological characteristics in the intestine. L. plantarum@MPN@CS showed significant therapeutic potential in treating Parkinson's disease (PD), a model for extraintestinal disorders, as ...

Relation between preoperative benzodiazepines and opioids on outcomes after total joint arthroplasty

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
To examine the association of preoperative opioids and/or benzodiazepines on postoperative outcomes in total knee and hip arthroplasty, we retrospectively compared postoperative outcomes in those prescribed preoperative opioids and/or benzodiazepines ...

Postoperative Stress Accelerates Atherosclerosis Through Inflammatory Remodeling of the HDL Proteome and Impaired Reverse Cholesterol Transport

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study shows that noncardiac surgical inflammation rapidly disrupts HDL function and cholesterol efflux in mice and human patients. Impaired reverse cholesterol transport after surgery drives rapid lipid accumulation, NETosis, and apoptosis within atherosclerotic plaques.

Opioid use following cardio-thoracic intensive care: risk factors and outcomes: a cohort study

open access: yesScientific Reports
Opioid misuse has become a serious public health problem. Patients admitted to cardio-thoracic critical care are usually exposed to opioids, but the incidence and effects of chronic opioid use are not known.

A Virtual Clinical Trial of Psychedelics to Treat Patients With Disorders of Consciousness

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Disorders of consciousness after severe brain injury are marked by reduced complexity of brain activity and limited treatment options. Using personalized whole‐brain models, this study shows that simulated lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin shift patient brain dynamics closer to criticality.

The focal index: a quantitative approach to morphological sub-phenotyping of COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: a pilot study

open access: yesIntensive Care Medicine Experimental
Background Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterised by significant morphological heterogeneity. Morphological sub-phenotyping can potentially be used to personalise mechanical ventilation.
