Periphyton plays an indispensable role in coastal saline‐alkali land, but its function is poorly understood. Soil physical and chemical properties (pH value, salinity, soil organic matter), enzyme activity, and microbial diversity (based on 16 s rDNA ...

Exploring Periphyton Unpredictability
Journal of the North American Benthological Society, 1993Periphyton is so highly variable that the community resists modelling. To explore the unpredictability of this important resource, we studied: 1) alternative variables to the traditional trophic ones, 2) the spatial scale of periphyton variability, and 3) different levels of description of the community.

Abstract Periphyton, the assemblage of attached aquatic plant and animal organisms on submerged substrates, has the same functions of oxygen and feed production as phytoplankton, but may be more stable and can be utilized more efficiently by fish.

Most studies of Amazonian algae concentrate on phytoplankton. Taxonomy and aspects of community structure are discussed by Gronblad (1945); Forster (1969, 1974); Martins (1980); Scott et al. (1965); Uherkovich (1981); Uherkovich and Schmidt (1974); Uherkovich and Rai (1979); Thomasson (1971), and many others.

Modelling periphyton in irrigation canals
Ecological Modelling, 2010Periphyton developments in water distribution canals induce major disturbances for system management, such as clogging problems when fixed algae are detached. Periphyton models can be used to simulate and improve canal management. The purpose of this paper is to review the periphyton models which integrate a hydrodynamic effect, and to discuss their ...

We examined the importance of temporal variability in top–down and bottom–up effects on the accumulation of stream periphyton, which are complex associations of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms.

Periphyton: Autoradiography of Zinc-65 Adsorption
Science, 1970The major site of sorption of zinc-65 in natural, matlike periphyton is on the upper surface of the community. There is a diffusion gradient within the community. Expression of results from short-term spiking experiments should thus be presented on an areal rather than gravimetric basis.
