Periphyton-based pond polyculture.
2005AbstractA brief history of fish polyculture system and pond polyculture (in particular) as an age-old practice in Asia is provided. A list of suitable fish species for polyculture is also given. The benefits of traditional polyculture can also be enjoyed in periphyton-based aquaculture systems.

Size Distribution in Periphyton
Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1987When periphytic organisms growing on artificial plants were grouped in logarithmically increasing size classes, patterns in the distribution of biomass were consistent over the season and under different grazing regimes, despite taxonornical changes in the dominant taxa of algae and invertebrates.

Phyco-Periphyton in an Oligotrophic Lake
Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, 1965Much limnological literature over the last century has been concerned with problems of primary productivity. In lentic waters large enough in size to promote a harvestable standing crop of fish, there exists numerous biocoenoses which have not been sufficiently considered.

Factors Affecting Sampling Variability of Freshwater Periphyton and the Power of Periphyton Studies
Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1992Estimates of periphyton abundance, biomass (as biovolume, chlorophyll, dry mass, or ash-free dry mass), and production were reanalyzed to examine the effect of the mean value, sampler size, type of substratum, and habitat on the variance of these estimates.

On stream periphyton‐turbulence interactions
New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, 1997Abstract A set of experiments was carried out to determine what effects periphyton communities could have on near‐bed hydraulic fields. We analysed velocity distribution, skewness and kurtosis coefficients, Reynolds stresses, relative turbulence intensity, coefficient of eddy diffusivity, velocity spectra, and turbulence scales at two flows with, and ...

Periphyton removal by freshwater micrograzers
1994In various experiments, the freshwater snail species Lymnaea peregra (Mull.), Physa fontinalis (L.), Valvata piscinalis (Mull.) and Bithynia tentaculata (L.) significantly removed periphyton from glass slides, while the two tested crustacean species, Asellus aquaticus (L.) and Gammarus pulex (L.), did not. Periphyton-based cage aquaculture.
2005AbstractThere are two types of aquaculture rearing system: land-based and water-based. The former includes ponds, raceways and tanks while the latter comprises enclosures, pens and cages. Cage is a rearing system enclosed on the bottom as well as the sides by wooden, mesh or more commonly net screens.

There is little consensus on the form of the periphyton biomass–macroinvertebrate diversity relationship in streams. One factor that these relationships do not account for is the growth form of primary producers. We (1) examined the periphyton biomass–macroinvertebrate diversity relationship in 24 streams of Cantabria, Spain, in July 2007, and (2 ...

Periphyton: ecology, exploitation and management
2005Abstract This book contains 18 chapters and provides an international review of periphyton ecology, exploitation and management. The ecological aspect focuses on periphyton structure and function in natural systems while the exploitation aspect covers its nutritive qualities and utilization by organisms, particularly in agriculture.
