Completion of nodal dissection in cutaneous melanoma with metastatic sentinel nodes: Prognostic impact in a population-based cohort study

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgical Oncology
Background In primary cutaneous melanoma (CM) with metastatic sentinel lymph node(s) (SLNB), treatment strategies may include completing a regional lymph node dissection (CLND).

The Role of Peritoneal Immunity in Peritoneal Endometriosis and Related Infertility

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Landmark, 2023
Endometriosis is defined as a disorder in which the glands and stroma of the endometrium grow and shed periodically outside the uterine cavity. Highly prevalent in women of reproductive age, the most common clinical manifestations are chronic pelvic pain

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of single circulating tumor cells in the follow‐up of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Single circulating tumor cells (sCTCs) from high‐grade serous ovarian cancer patients were enriched, imaged, and genomically profiled using WGA and NGS at different time points during treatment. sCTCs revealed enrichment of alterations in Chromosomes 2, 7, and 12 as well as persistent or emerging oncogenic CNAs, supporting sCTC identity.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

The molecular biology of peritoneal metastatic disease

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2023
Peritoneal metastases are a common form of tumor cell dissemination in gastrointestinal malignancies. Peritoneal metastatic disease (PMD) is associated with severe morbidity and resistance to currently employed therapies.

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.

Prevention of Peritoneal Adhesions by Non-Thermal Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Treatment on Mouse Model: A Proof of Concept Study

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Surgery, 2020
Purposes: Formation of peritoneal adhesions is a common consequence of abdominopelvic surgeries and remarkably increases the mortality and morbidity. Moreover, peritoneal adhesions linked to chronic abdominopelvic pain and infertility in women.

Establishment of a humanized patient‐derived xenograft mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer for preclinical evaluation of combination immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We have established a humanized orthotopic patient‐derived xenograft (Hu‐oPDX) mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) that recapitulates human tumor–immune interactions. Using combined anti‐PD‐L1/anti‐CD73 immunotherapy, we demonstrate the model's improved biological relevance and enhanced translational value for preclinical ...

Embryological, anatomical and clinical considerations on pleuroperitoneal communication

open access: yesPleura and Peritoneum, 2023
The pleural and peritoneal cavity share many related features due to their common celomic origin. Normally these two spaces are completely separated with the development of the diaphragm.

KLK7 overexpression promotes an aggressive phenotype and facilitates peritoneal dissemination in colorectal cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KLK7, a tissue kallikrein‐related peptidase, is elevated in advanced colorectal cancer and associated with shorter survival. High KLK7 levels in ascites correlate with peritoneal metastasis. In mice, KLK7 overexpression increases metastasis. In vitro, KLK7 enhances cancer cell proliferation, migration, adhesion, and spheroid formation, driving ...
