Sequential sampling of junction trees for decomposable graphs

open access: yes, 2020
The junction-tree representation provides an attractive structural property for organizing a decomposable graph. In this study, we present a novel stochastic algorithm, which we call the junction-tree expander, for sequential sampling of junction trees ...

Analytical derivation: An epistemic game for solving mathematically based physics problems

open access: yesPhysical Review Physics Education Research, 2016
Problem solving, which often involves multiple steps, is an integral part of physics learning and teaching. Using the perspective of the epistemic game, we documented a specific game that is commonly pursued by students while solving mathematically based

Context-specific independencies for ordinal variables in chain regression models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this work we handle with categorical (ordinal) variables and we focus on the (in)dependence relationship under the marginal, conditional and context-specific perspective.

Graphics for uncertainty [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Graphical methods such as colour shading and animation, which are widely available, can be very effective in communicating uncertainty. In particular, the idea of a ‘density strip’ provides a conceptually simple representation of a distribution and this ...

Bayesian Regularization for Graphical Models With Unequal Shrinkage [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Statistical Association, 2018
We consider a Bayesian framework for estimating a high-dimensional sparse precision matrix, in which adaptive shrinkage and sparsity are induced by a mixture of Laplace priors.

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Combining Local Appearance and Holistic View: Dual-Source Deep Neural Networks for Human Pose Estimation

open access: yes, 2015
We propose a new learning-based method for estimating 2D human pose from a single image, using Dual-Source Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DS-CNN).

Why emerging leaders should focus on being good postdoctoral supervisors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Swamped with work and suddenly a new student is waiting at your doorstep for supervision? Great—this is your chance! In this article, we share tips on how postdocs can strengthen their leadership skills while supervising students. This image has been created using DALL·E. Many postdocs work as leaders later in their career.
