Small cetacean captures in Peruvian artisanal fisheries: High despite protective legislation

Biological Conservation, 2010
We detail the first direct, at sea monitoring of small cetacean interactions with Peruvian artisanal drift gillnet and longline fisheries. A total of 253 small cetaceans were captured during 66 monitored fishing trips (Gillnet: 46 trips; Longline: 20 trips) from the port of Salaverry, northern Peru (8 o 14 0 S, 78 o 59 0 W) from March 2005 to July 2007.

Fisheries in upwelling regions — with special reference to peruvian waters

Geoforum, 1972
Abstract The anchovy population that is the basis of the Peru fishery, the world's largest, is a phytoplankton feeding species, supported by an upwelling based ecosystem. The fish is very short-lived and grows rapidly — both criteria for high turnover rate — high yield fisheries.

Climate variability and the Peruvian scallop fishery: the role of formal institutions in resilience building

Climatic Change, 2009
Peru experiences recurrent ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) events during which the Peruvian bay scallop (Argopecten purpuratus) undergoes substantial changes in its stock size. In the North of the country strong warm ENSO events are synonymous with floods and river discharges that negatively affect scallop biomass, while in the South increased sea ...

Characterization of a Peruvian coastal fishery targeting the Pacific guitarfish Pseudobatos planiceps

Journal of Fish Biology
AbstractFrom December 2012 to June 2014, 796 Pacific guitarfish were caught in 183 fishing sets in northern Peru. Catch occurred in 86.3% of sets. Most individuals caught were mature with a bias toward males. The mean total length for females and males was 83.4 cm, and 91.1 cm, respectively. The capture per unit effort (CPUE) was 12.6 ± 3.4 guitarfish (

Growth, life cycle and fishery biology of Loligo gahi (d’Orbigny, 1835) off the Peruvian coast

Fisheries Research, 2001
Abstract The Patagonian squid, Loligo gahi (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae), is a commercially important species of artisanal fisheries on the Peruvian coast. This study aims to provide preliminary information on the life cycle of this species by means of age estimation using statoliths collected in 1997. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) variation during 1996
