The Peruvian anchovy fishery is the largest worldwide in terms of catches. The fishery started during the mid 1950s, and since then it has been highly dependent on natural stock fluctuations, due to the sensitivity of anchovy stocks to ocean-climate ...

Motivations for compliance in Peruvian manta ray fisheries
Marine Policy, 2021Abstract Fishermen’s compliance with fisheries legislation is influenced by a combination of economic, calculated, normative, and social motivations. Compliance can be enhanced by fishers’ inclusiveness within management directives. Since the 2015 fishing ban on the giant oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) in Peru, there has been no significant ...

Identifying priority areas for improvement in Peruvian Fisheries
Marine Policy, 2021Abstract Peru is one of the most important countries when it comes to fisheries production by volume. On average (2004–2016), the anchoveta fishery alone accounts for 84.5% of the national volume of fish landed. Yet, in recent years, artisanal fisheries for jumbo flying squid and mahi mahi, as well as a number of small scale fisheries, have undergone

Peruvian Fisheries: Conservation and Development
Economic Development and Cultural Change, 1973Peru became an overnight sensation in the realm of fishery statistics. Beginning with minimal production, Peru within a decade became the world's top producer of fish in 1962, surpassing even Japan, and has maintained that position every year since.

The effect of Peruvian small‐scale fisheries on sunfishes (Molidae)
Journal of Fish Biology, 2018Reports were compiled of sunfish (family Molidae) by‐catch in Peruvian small‐scale fisheries and sunfish by‐catch rates were estimated using data from shore‐based and onboard monitoring programmes. A total of 114 sunfishes were reported in the longline and gillnet fisheries along the Peru coast from 2005 to 2017.

With declining capture fisheries production, maintaining nutrient supplies largely hinges on substituting wild fish with economically comparable farmed animals. Although such transitions are increasingly commonplace across global inland and coastal communities, their nutritional consequences are unknown.

Local depletion by a fishery can affect seabird foraging
Long-term demographic studies show that seabird populations may suffer from competition with fisheries. Understanding this process is critical for the implementation of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAF).
