A simple protocol for the synthesis of perylene bisimides from perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride
PBIs were synthesized from the reaction of perylene bisanhydrides and primary amines in imidazole as solvent. Maleimide, anthraquinone or ferrocene were bonded to the side chain and the S-trityl group was replaced by imidazole in S-trityl cysteine.

Azuperylene: The Nonalternant Isomer of Perylene
Abstract The isoelectronic isomer of perylene, hereafter called as azuperylene, has been prepared. Electronic structure analysis reveals that the new isomer can be described as a union of two antiparallel azulenes in which the azulene‐type aromatic character of the starting azulene is partially retained.

Near‐infrared fluorescent pH indicators based on perylenediimide were constructed in a modular receptor–spacer–fluorophore–spacer–receptor format with heterocyclic amino moieties at the bay positions. Counterintuitively, the dibrominated intermediate with two heavy atoms is more emissive than the heterocyclic compounds.
