Free radicals in γ-irradiated PETN

An EPR investigation ofγ-irradiated PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate) was conducted. Low temperature irradiation accumulates at least two different radicals. The more stable radical is the NO2 radical presumably produced by photon cleavage of the NO2 groups and/or by radical reactions in excited states resulting in detached NO2.

Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a nitrate ester, is used primarily as an explosive. It is of environmental concern, posing a threat to aquatic organisms with an estimated EC50 five times greater than that of RDX. This study evaluated the kinetics and products of PETN degradation in the presence of granular iron.

Structure of detonation waves in PETN

A VISAR technique was used to study the structure of the reaction zone in PETN for various initial densities and dispersion of samples. The flow in the pressed charges corresponds to the classical denotation model. In the case of bulk density, the peculiarities corresponding to an explosive combustion model are recorded.

We investigate the initial chemical events sustaining a detonation in shock‐compressed PETN resulting from intermolecular collisions behind the shock wave using first‐principles reactive molecular dynamics. The reaction dynamics of bimolecular collisions was studied as a function of collision velocities and crystallographic orientations.

Pentaerithrityltetranitrat (PETN) wurde wahrend des 2. Weltkrieges synthetisiert und kurze Zeit darauf in die Therapie eingefuhrt [2]. Bereits in den 50iger Jahren wurden seine Wirkungen bei der Behandlung der Angina pectoris charakterisiert und publiziert.
