Proving torture: demanding the impossible

open access: yesForced Migration Review, 2017
New research demonstrates that errors by Home Office asylum caseworkers in their handling of expert medical evidence of torture can make it almost impossible for survivors of torture seeking asylum in the UK to prove that they were tortured.

Heightened threats to small woodland caribou populations in Canada and key considerations for their persistence Menaces pesant sur les petites populations de caribou des bois au Canada et considérations essentielles à leur rétablissement

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, EarlyView.
Abstract Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are one of the most iconic wildlife species in Canada. These large ungulates depend on undisturbed, interconnected assemblages of mature and old‐growth conifer forests for survival, and exhibit life‐history traits typical of K‐selected species (i.e., low reproductive rates, long generation times, and slow ...

Ecological scale mediates nonlinear relationships of animal nutrient excretion with dissolved organic matter

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
We show that nutrient excretion by vertebrates and invertebrates varies nonlinearly with dissolved organic matter concentration and composition and by taxonomic rank, with stronger patterns at the individual compared to the community level. Our findings highlight the importance of examining animal‐mediated nutrient cycling across taxa and ecological ...

No effect of short‐term exposure to ocean acidification on individual‐level variation in behaviour and susceptibility to predation in a Great Barrier Reef damselfish

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study shows that projected ocean acidification does not alter behaviour or predation risk in coral reef fish, challenging earlier assumptions. By quantifying consistent individual‐level behavioural differences and relating individual traits to survival during a live‐predation trial, it also provides evidence for a boldness–predation trade‐off in a

Application of a high throughput Alamar blue biofilm susceptibility assay to Staphylococcus aureus biofilms

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials, 2009
Background Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis biofilms differ in structure, growth and regulation, and thus the high-throughput method of evaluating biofilm susceptibility that has been published for S. epidermidis cannot be applied to S.

The Contested Grounds of Democracy's Noninstrumental Value: Deliberative Democracy Versus Public Equality

open access: yesConstellations, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Disagreement about democracy's noninstrumental value often sees the opposition between two competing approaches. Liberty‐based arguments assign normative priority to a principle of liberty, thereby focusing on democratic self‐government as the core principle through which political authority can be reconciled with individual liberty.

Criminal Records as Classification Situations

open access: yesThe British Journal of Sociology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Marion Fourcade and Kieran Healy developed the notion of “classification situations” to describe how ordinal schema that sort and rank individuals, like credit scores, are used to differentiate opportunities, prices, and services in ways that structure life chances while masking inequality as meritocratic.
