What general practitioners need to know about patent foramen ovale [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A patent foramen ovale (PFO) consists of a hole between the right and left atriums of the heart that did not close the way it should after birth. Twenty five percent of the population have a PFO, but this usually does not cause problems, because the ...

Cellular Snowballing: Cell Adhesion and Migration Drive the Self‐Assembly of Cell‐Microgel Biohybrid Spheroids

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A new class of biohybrid spheroids is engineered through the self‐assembly of adherent cells and extracellular matrix‐mimetic hydrogel microparticles (microgels). By mimicking a snowballing effect, this approach enables scalable formation of porous, millimeter‐scale spheroids with enhanced cell viability and molecular diffusion.

Octanol/water distribution coefficients of the C~1~ through C~7~ perfluoro-n-alkyl sulfonates: Comparison of the IEFPCM-UFF, CPCM, and SMD solvation models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The octanol/water distribution coefficients (log D~ow~) of the C~1~ through C~7~ perfluoro-n-alkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) were calculated using the M062X/6-311++G(d,p) and MP2/6-311++G(d,p)//M062X/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory and the IEFPCM-UFF, CPCM, and ...

Macrophage Extracellular Traps in Immunity and Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
As a macrophage‐mediated innate defense mechanism, the dysregulated release of METs drives chronic inflammation and influences tumor progression. Furthermore, METs exhibit a functional duality within the tumor microenvironment, capable of both promoting and suppressing tumor development.

Pooled Analysis of PFO Occluder Device Trials in Patients With PFO and Migraine

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2021
Although observational studies have shown percutaneous patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure to be a safe means of reducing the frequency and duration of migraine, randomized clinical trials have not met their primary efficacy endpoints. The authors report the results of a pooled analysis of individual participant data from the 2 randomized trials using ...

Enhancement of perfluorooctanoate and perfluorooctanesulfonate activity at acoustic cavitation bubble interfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Acoustic cavitation driven by ultrasonic irradiation decomposes and mineralizes the recalcitrant perfluorinated surfactants perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA).

AI‐Assisted Self‐Powered Wearable Dual‐Mode Sensor With TENG and Stretchable Optical Fiber for Neurological Disorder Diagnostics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This manuscript presents the WDMS platform, an AI‐assisted, self‐powered wearable dual‐mode sensor for tele‐neurology. It integrates a contact–separation TENG insole with stretchable polyurethane optical‐fiber strain sensors to synchronously track plantar pressure and lower‐limb muscle deformation.

Photochemical transformation of perfluoroalkyl acid precursors in water using engineered nanomaterials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The production of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) has been phased out over recent decades; however, no significant decline in their environmental concentrations has been observed.

Exploring the fate, transport and risk of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) in a coastal region of China using a multimedia model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) and related substances have been widely applied in both industrial processes and domestic products in China. Exploring the environmental fate and transport of PFOS using modeling methods provides an important link between
