Sustained expression of PGC-1α in the rat nigrostriatal system selectively impairs dopaminergic function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress have been implicated in the etiology of Parkinson's disease. Therefore, pathways controlling mitochondrial activity rapidly emerge as potential therapeutic targets.

PPARGC1A regulates transcriptional control of mitochondrial biogenesis in early bovine embryos

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
Extensive mitochondrial replication during oogenesis and its role in oocyte maturation and fertilization indicate that the amount of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) may play a significant role in early embryonic development.

Dietary Glutamine Supplementation Alleviated Rumen Epithelium Oxidative Damage and Apoptosis Induced by Feed Restriction via Maintaining Mitochondrial Homeostasis in Female Yaks

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Dietary glutamine (Gln) supplementation increased the ATP levels and promoted cell proliferation in the rumen epithelium of feed‐restricted yaks. Besides, Gln inhibited ROS accumulation and reduced oxidative damage and apoptosis in the rumen epithelium of feed‐restricted yaks.

Parkinson's disease: autoimmunity and neuroinflammation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that causes the death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The resulting dopamine deficiency in the basal ganglia leads to a movement disorder that is characterized by classical parkinsonian ...

Histological Characterization and Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis of Gonads During Early Sex Differentiation in the Northern Snakehead (Channa argus)

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
This study delineates the early sex differentiation timeline in the northern snakehead (Channa argus). These findings provide a foundation for future sex‐control breeding in this economically important species. ABSTRACT The northern snakehead (Channa argus) is an economically important aquaculture species in China.

Anti-oxidants in Parkinson's disease therapy: a critical point of view [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a degenerative neurological syndrome, which is characterized by the preferential death of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons in the SubstantiaNigra.

PPARγ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) protects neuroblastoma cells against amyloid-beta (Aβ) induced cell death and neuroinflammation via NF-κB pathway

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2017
Background Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) and the formation of neurofibrillary tangles. Aβ is the main constituent of senile plaques and is largely involved in neuronal death and neuroinflammation ...

Skeletal muscle-specific expression of PGC-1α-b, an exercise-responsive isoform, increases exercise capacity and peak oxygen uptake. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) predicts mortality and is associated with endurance performance. Trained subjects have a high VO(2max) due to a high cardiac output and high metabolic capacity of skeletal muscles.

Hepatotoxicity of Nonesterified Fatty Acids to Dairy Cows: Pathophysiological Mechanisms and Prospective Solutions

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Unregulated inflammation increases non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), and triggers multi‐pathway hepatocyte damage including oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and metabolic disorders in dairy cows. ABSTRACT Circulating concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFAs) are elevated due to lipid mobilization from adipose tissue in ...
