Shopping for phages? Unpacking design rules for therapeutic phage cocktails

Current Opinion in Virology, 2022
In bacteriophage therapy, the combination of different phages into a single cocktail is of critical importance to overcome the narrow host range of single phage isolates. Today, the design of therapeutic cocktails is often akin to a black box and relies largely on intuition and (pre-)availability of isolates in local collections.

Computational design of phage cocktails based on phage-bacteria infection networks

Computers in Biology and Medicine, 2022
The misuse and overuse of antibiotics have boosted the proliferation of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, which are considered a major public health issue in the twenty-first century. Phage therapy may be a promising way in the treatment of infections caused by MDR pathogens, without the side effects of the current available antimicrobials.

New Phage cocktail against infantile Sepsis bacteria

Microbial Pathogenesis, 2020
A total of 54 positive blood aerobic cultures of suspected blood sepsis in neonates were purified, diagnosed and tested for antibiotic susceptibility. Six bacterial pathogens of Escherichia coli (10 isolates), Klebsiella pneumoniae (10 isolates), Haemophilus influenzae (4 isolates), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3 isolates), Citrobacter fruendii (1 isolate ...

Host happy hour: Phage cocktail targets IBD-associated microbes

Cell Host & Microbe, 2022
Bacteriophage therapy is a promising strategy to treat bacterial infections and sculpt the microbiome. In a recent Cell paper, Federici et al. (2022) demonstrate that a Klebsiella pneumoniae phage cocktail can specifically remove pathobionts from the mouse gut. Safety and persistence of therapeutic phages were shown in a Phase 1 trial.
