Postsynaptic phase separation

Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 2021
Liquid–liquid phase separation of CaMKII and glutamate receptor clusters in postsynaptic membranes might mediate trans-synaptic alignment with the presynaptic vesicle release machinery.

Phase separation in fungi

Nature Microbiology, 2023
Phase separation, in which macromolecules partition into a concentrated phase that is immiscible with a dilute phase, is involved with fundamental cellular processes across the tree of life. We review the principles of phase separation and highlight how it impacts diverse processes in the fungal kingdom.

Fracture Phase Separation

Physical Review Letters, 2009
Here we report novel phase-separation behavior accompanying mechanical fracture ("fracture phase separation"), which is observed in polymer solutions. Surprisingly, mechanical fracture becomes a dominant coarsening process of the phase separation. The transition from viscoelastic to fracture phase separation corresponds to the "ductile-to-brittle ...

Photoinduced Phase Separation

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2006
A novel approach of photoinduced phase separation has been demonstrated with a photolabile anionic surfactant, mixed with an inert nonionic surfactant in the presence of salting-out electrolyte. Breakdown of the photolyzable surfactant results in hydrophobic photoproducts, which are emulsified by the remaining inert surfactant; added electrolyte ...

Phase separating cell fate

Cell Stem Cell, 2021
How master regulators such as Oct4 can shape 3D genome architecture during cell reprogramming remains poorly understood. In this issue of Cell Stem Cell, Wang et al. (2021) demonstrate that Oct4 undergoes phase separation to reconfigure TAD architecture for cell fate control.

Predictable phase-separated proteins

Nature Chemistry, 2020
An approach to design artificial intrinsically disordered proteins using a short peptide as a repeating unit has been reported. This design enables the phase behaviour of the protein to be finely tuned inside cells and enabled the formation of phase-separated condensates that can modulate chemical reactions.

Oncogenesis by phase separation

Nature Reviews Genetics, 2021
A new study by Ahn et al. shows that chimeric proteins containing intrinsically disordered regions mediate oncogenesis by inducing liquid–liquid phase separation and thereby affecting chromatin conformation and transcription.

Phase-Separated Multienzyme Biosynthesis

Biomacromolecules, 2020
Liquid-liquid phase separation forms condensates that feature a highly concentrated liquid phase, a defined yet dynamic boundary, and dynamic exchange at and across the boundary. Phase transition drives the formation of dynamic multienzyme complexes in cells, for example, the purinosome, which forms subcellular macrobodies responsible for de novo ...

Phase separation, charge separation and biogenesis

Biosystems, 1981
The current view of bioenergetics postulates transmembrane charge separation as a primary mechanism of energy storage and transformation. Using that bioenergetic view we examine possible methods of photon driven transduction in primordial vesicles.

Texturising by phase separation

Biotechnology Advances, 2006
The most common food processing operations, thermal and mechanical treatments, both affect phase state and texture of foods. The phase separation threshold for food biopolymer mixtures is usually below their concentrations characteristically found in food. Phase-separation underpins texturisation processes during food processing and digestion.
