ABSTRACT Feeding and sectioning of the freshwater polyp hydra generates signals that (1) shorten the G2-phase of epithelial cells and (2) prevent epithelial cells from entering mitosis for a short period of time. The latter effect appears to be mediated by inhibitor I, an endogenous morphogenetically active compound of hydra tissue.
